Gävle —the city with lush parks and beautiful summer islands

Gävle is a lively university town with big ambitions. Here you can enjoy a beautiful coastal location, pleasant parks and irresistible small-town charm.

The university in Gävle is a modern university with a strong focus on the work environment and adapting education to the needs of the market. Since the end of the 1800s, the city has had a successful industry, which has further contributed to its ambition. Gävle also has the advantage of being located on the scenic Jungfrukusten (Virgin Coast), which extends around 32 km outside of Gästrikland and Hälsingland. Here there are plenty of great spots for swimming, fishing and sailing along the magnificent archipelago. In the city you will find lush havens for both relaxation and a range of activities.

With its advantageous location by the sea, the area became an important port early on for both national and international trade, and Gävle was designated a city in 1446. The area has an interesting history with many ups and downs. In 1869, large parts of northern Gävle burnt down. However the southern part fared relatively well and here you can still visit Gamla Gävle (Old Gävle) and imagine that you are back a bygone era. Don’t forget to check out Joe Hill gården (Joe Hill Garden), where the famous Swedish-American union leader and poet was born, and learn more about his fascinating life.

Boulognerskogen (Boulogner Forest) is a fantastic green belt area in Gävle and one of the country’s largest urban parks. Find a secluded picnic spot, invite friends to a party at one of the barbeque facilities or take the kids to the big playground. Beautiful stone bridges take you over the water and during summer you can also play mini golf, go fishing and enjoy concerts and the theatre.

In Gävles skärgård (Gävle archipelago) you will find many beautiful destinations that are perfect for a weekend getaway. Hop on the Limbåten (Lim Boat) in central Gävle and head out to the idyllic summer island of Limön that has welcomed summer tourists since the 1800s.

Next, head to the old fishing spot of Bönan, just north of Gävle, which also dates back to the 1800s. Shop for fresh fish directly from the fishermen and don’t forget to try the famous Böneböcklingen (Bönan smoked Baltic herring)!

A trip to Gävle is something you don’t want to miss. There is everything here, from an exciting history to beautiful scenery, and the northern hospitality will no doubt make you feel comfortable—whether you choose to stay for a longer holiday or a weekend package.
