King Frederik III had big plans for Fredericia in 1650, when he founded the town with the idea of creating the perfect capital. Its coastal location in the centre of Denmark made Fredericia the ideal candidate for a capital city. The best-laid plans often go awry, but history is still alive in Fredericia, including the town’s ramparts, known as Voldene, which are some of the best-preserved in northern Europe.
Visit the Bymuseet by the ramparts, or take a trip up to the top of Det Hvide Tårn for a fantastic view over the town and belt. Or jump on your bike and visit the Trelde Næs nature reserve for excellent swimming. The bravest amongst you can scale the heights with the new attraction of bridge walking at an altitude of 60 metres on the old Lillebæltsbro.
Planning a city break in Frederica? No problem! It’s less than an hour by road from either Aarhus or Odense. Families are also welcome in Fredericia. Play ‘til you drop in Madsby Legepark with its free petting zoo, moon car track, mini golf, BBQ area and massive playground. Take the mini train through Madsbyparken to Minibyen, or visit Fredericia Badeland and Dinos Legeland.
If travelling to Fredericia in the summer, there are free beach and water activities on Østerstrand. Another tip is to visit Naturcentret ved Trelde Næs, where you can borrow free items such as crab grabbers, fishing nets and camp fire necessities.
