Welcome to Smugglers Blues, your perfect Cornish hideaway.
Tucked away in the peaceful heart of Fowey, widely regarded as one of Cornwall’s most picturesque and vibrant waterside towns, this lovingly restored 18th-century granite cottage is the kind of place that feels like a secret worth sharing.
Perched quietly on Rose Hill, Smugglers Blues offers the best of both worlds: just a gentle 4–5 minute stroll brings you to the lively harbour, independent shops, waterside cafés and welcoming pubs, yet you’re far enough away to enjoy the calm, laid-back atmosphere that makes a holiday feel like a true escape.
Fowey is a dream destination for food lovers. From cosy wine bars and waterside seafood spots to exceptional dining and Michelin-starred restaurants nearby, the area has earned national recognition; with The Sunday Times recently naming several local favourites among the best places to eat in Cornwall. Whether it’s a long, leisurely lunch or an evening overlooking the estuary, this is coastal dining at its finest.
Inside, the cottage is warm, welcoming and thoughtfully designed for comfort, sleeping up to four guests across two charming bedrooms. It’s a true home-from-home, a place to unwind, slow down, and settle into the rhythm of coastal life.
One of the cottage’s most special features is the private, sun-kissed courtyard garden, a rare luxury in Fowey. Thanks to its unique aspect, it enjoys sunlight from sunrise through to sunset, making it the perfect spot for morning coffee, lazy afternoons with a book, or relaxed evenings with a glass of something chilled as the day fades into dusk.
Life on the water is at the heart of Fowey, with endless ways to explore at your own pace. Whether it’s sailing, kayaking, or paddleboarding along the estuary, hopping on the short ferry to Polruan, or venturing further afield towards Mevagissey, there’s something for everyone. You can even experience the coastline from a different perspective with an exhilarating sea safari on a high-powered RIB, or simply enjoy watching the ever-changing activity on the water from the harbour.
A picturesque 10-minute walk leads you to Readymoney Cove; a sheltered, secluded beach that feels like a hidden gem. Framed by lush greenery and gently lapping waters, it’s the perfect spot for a swim, a picnic, or simply unwinding by the sea. Overlooking the cove is the historic St Catherine's Castle, adding a sense of history and character to the landscape.
From here, the views are truly spectacular, sweeping across the River Fowey as it opens out into the sea, and stretching beyond to the vast Atlantic. Whether you’re watching boats drift by, catching the changing light at sunset, or simply taking a quiet moment to soak it all in, it’s a setting that perfectly captures the magic of Cornwall at its very best.
Step outside and Fowey itself is full of character and charm. Wander artisan shops, browse galleries and boutiques, or simply soak up the sea air along the harbour. Dining ranges from traditional Cornish pub fare to award-winning cuisine, and in the evenings, the village has a gentle, inviting buzz that makes it hard not to linger just a little longer. (A small note: the walk back up Rose Hill is a little steep, though most guests find it well worth it.)
For quieter moments or the occasional rainy day, the cottage is well stocked with books, board games, and an extensive DVD collection, from family favourites to classic films (yes, Bond is here too).
Whether you’re here for exceptional food, coastal walks, sea air, or simply a slower pace of life, Smugglers Blues offers a warm, welcoming base in one of Cornwall’s most special locations.
It’s no surprise guests return time and time again.

Fantastic trip to Cornwall and staying at James's cottage is always amazing. The cottage is so close to the sea, its so well equipped, cosy and warm. The bed is so comfortable, and the cottage has everything that you need to have an amazing, fabulous holiday in Cornwall.
Lovely little cottage, perfectly located for Fowey which is a 5 minute walk away. The cottage is very well equipped, has everything you could possibly need and is a good size for 4 people. Highly recommended, we would definately stay again.
Had a lovely few days at this cottage. Very comfortable. In a great location for days out or just for a walk into town (the hill climb back up is pretty steep).
Lovely family and pet friendly cottage. Well equipped for self-catering and spacious for a family holiday. Very quiet location and close to the town centre. Well recommended.
Stayed a few times now and fallen in love with Fowey. Aside from a restful few days, and some property viewings.. it’s always a delight to stay. Weather not so good this time.. but plenty of films, books and games to keep us entertained.. Thank you.
Great stay again, warm, comfortable, and great location
Lovely stay again. Been staying on and off and will be this year while I renovate my house. James is a great host and makes the cottage very homely and comfortable for us, a home from home..Thanks again James. See you in a month or so.

A lovely stay at a Smugglers Blues, the always perfect mix of rest and inspiration. The coastal views, winding lanes, and charm of the town gave me the headspace I needed, while the time away let me focus on plans for my own renovations and came home with fresh ideas and renewed energy for the next stage of work on my house. Thanks to James and Em the caretaker.. an abosolute legend.
Very clean, warm and cosy feel. Lovely new kitchen and bathroom.. comfy beds.. loved the Laird Hamilton surf poster... loads of dvds for a rainy day.. a home from home
The property is a real home away from home. It is well equipped, clean and tidy. Both the kitchen and bathroom are new and fresh. The real gem of this cottage is its location. A short walk and you are in the centre of Fowey, its pubs, shops and restaurants. A really great place, I will be back!
Kids loved it, great cottage and location. Great boarding on the river and creeks and the ocean too.. readymoney beach was a treat. Fed and watered to the extreme.. coming back soon. Thanks James
Lovely cozy cottage and sunny seating area outside. Everything you could need inside. Very clean and homely. Great location, 5 minutes walk to harbour area with plenty of little shops and eateries. Would definitely stay her again or recommend to others.
We had a lovely stay in this house. All very proper and in good condition.
From this location you can easily make the most beautiful walks next to the coast line. The guidelines from James are really helpful.
Fowey is Cosy little town with an astonishing sea view. The regatta week created an additional boost with many nice sailing boots and events.
Fowey needs an return visit!
The property is situated on a hill slightly outside the busy town centre of Fowey. The surroundings are quiet and access is easy, the harbour and all amenities can be reached on foot within a short walk. Upon arrival, we found everything as described, the cottage was neat and clean. Communication with the owner was thoroughly superb and very friendly. We had a small problem with a malfunctioning toaster, but the owner instantly arranged to have a new one delivered, even though he was on holiday himself. All things considered, we can only highly recommend the property when visiting beautiful Cornwall.
We have had a fantatsic week in Fowey. From the point of booking, James was super helpful with really good communication about things to do and places to eat (places get booked up in advance). The property is a lovely 2 bed cottage, there were just 2 of us and we had plenty of space and a nice outside area. The location is about a 5min walk from.the main town. Its so lovely and quiet, its got double glazing too which is a nice bonus. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need and we found it ro be like a home from home. It was very hard to leave :-(Free parking was available all week in a carpark 5 mins walk away. James had suggested lots of things to do in advance and sent us more updated ideas during our stay, he was so knowledgeable about the local area and just such a great host. We found Fowey to be a good central base for visiting lots of places, it wasnt stupidly busy like some other areas and was nice to come back to a quiet base in the evenings.Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a resful break in Cornwall. Thank you James, we had the best time :-)
Returned for a second stay at this cosy cottage, great location, comfortable and clean with everything you could need in a home away from home .
Great host thank you James
