The village also has a historic castle, Baltimore Beacon, offering lovely views of the coastline.Couples often find Baltimore ideal for its tranquil setting and easy access to boat trips. You can enjoy strolls along the harbour, dine at local eateries with fresh catches, and embark on scenic cruises to Fastnet Rock and other islands.Schull, slightly further west, offers another excellent base. It's a larger village than Baltimore, with a wider range of shops, cafes, and restaurants, as well as a bustling marina. The best time to visit Fastnet Rock is generally between May and September, when the weather is most favourable for boat trips and sea conditions are typically calmer. These months offer the longest daylight hours and the warmest temperatures, making the journey to and around the Rock more comfortable. The sea tends to be less choppy, which is important for the boat tours that operate around the lighthouse. It's also the best period for spotting local wildlife, such as seabirds and sometimes even whales or dolphins. For those keen on photography, the extended daylight provides ample opportunity for capturing the dramatic scenery of the lighthouse and the rugged coastline.
