Faarumai Waterfalls are among the most magnificent natural sites on the island of Tahiti. The three impressive chutes of water plunge into pools, surrounded by tropical vegetation and dramatic cliffs. Enjoy the hike past exotic plants to reach this watery wonderland near the village of Tiarei. Trek with your family through the dense thicket of chestnut trees and tropical vegetation. Cross the various rickety bridges and footpaths over streams to reach the waterfalls. Make sure to bring mosquito repellent to keep the bugs away. You will arrive first at Vaimahutu falls, which is so tall that it is difficult to capture in a single photo. Continue walking along the forest trails for another 20 minutes to reach the other two falls, known as Haamarere Iti and the Haamarere Rahi. Snap photos of the two spectacular feats of nature, which stand side by side. You may see visitors in the water, feeling the vibrations of the falls. Be aware, however, that swimming in the waterfall basins was outlawed after a rock fell on a swimmer’s head. Walk to the nearby Arahoho Blowhole, where waves from the ocean crash through a gap in the rocks, creating a spectacular burst. Relax on the black sand beach near the blowhole. Note that the waterfalls have a continuous water source year-round, with denser flows in the wet season that runs from November to April. The waterfalls are open at all times to the public for free. Faarumai Waterfalls are located near the village of Tiarei between Mahaena and Papenoo on the northern coast of Tahiti. Drive east for about 45 minutes from the capital city of Papeete to get here. See fascinating sights on the way, such as the Point Venus Lighthouse and the Black Sand Beach in Māhina.
