Ems Travel Guide

Tourist Guide

While on a city trip to the Swiss city of Ems, enjoy romantic culture and picturesque mountain scenery.

Switzerland impresses with awe-inspiring landscapes. Soft rolling hills with grapevines and old farms, lakes and rugged mountains offer diverse views and experiences. Winter sports especially draw many tourists to Switzerland. The small country borders Germany, France, Austria, Italy and Liechtenstein and combines a number of cultural influences. To this day, historical buildings are testament to the styles of different eras and cultures. Take a city trip in Switzerland and discover the history of Europe.

While on your short trip to Domat/Ems, marvel at the mountain panorama and enjoy the delicious Swiss pastries, such as Rüebli tart, in one of the traditional cafés. The city of Ems, located in the canton of Graubünden, is home to approximately 7,000 inhabitants, is of Romance-German origin and bilingual.

Take a stroll through the centre of town and discover the architecturally interesting building Sentupada. The cubic structure by the architect Maurus Frei is the community centre which is regularly home to cultural events. The life of the village happens here. Small shops, cafés and restaurants provide the charm of the city.

Ems is located in the Rhine Valley, surrounded by forests and softly rolling hills called Tumas. While on your trip, climb the Turera Tuma and discover the fortified tower from the Middle Ages. The origins of Ems trace back to the late Bronze period. Especially during the Middle Ages, large landowners settled in the idyllically situated town of Ems. While on your city trip to Ems, be sure to visit the numerous medieval churches.

The church S. Gion Baptista is a famous sight which is worth a visit. The listed building was constructed on a hill on the right bank of the Rhine in the 12th century. Inside, visitors will marvel at murals from the 16th century as well as a Gothic winged altar with precious wood carvings.

While on your mini-break in Ems, also visit the Carolingian Church of St. Pieter towards the east of the Tuma Caste. It is the oldest church of the area and was built around the year 800. Its location at the hill in the centre of Ems and the simple, rectangular form lend the monument its charm. The arched windows are decorated with stained glasses and the galley walls have depictions of the apostles.

Be sure to also visit the galleries while on your city trip to Ems. The art gallery Artom of the artist Guido Tomaschett combines texts and paintings. Changing exhibitions await in Via Quadras.

Great location, it had everything we needed. Right in the heart of the old part of Chur, easy walking distance to everything.. nice comfy bed & very clean, easy to get in to the apartment too. The sofa had quite a few stains & the headboard could do with a hoover but otherwise lovely.
