Plan a day at Emmen's Wildlands Adventure Zoo, a new attraction park that combines the zoo with a theme park. The animals are kept in very spacious enclosures, which can make it difficult to see them, but then this is not your ordinary zoo. On a rainy day, you can go shopping in the de Weiert mall, the biggest covered mall in the north of the Netherlands where you’ll find chain stores as well as boutiques. Every year, Emmen kicks off summer with the 'Alles Kids in Drenthe' festival. The centre of town is transformed into a kids' paradise where they can do sports and watch theatre and music performances.
Culture lovers must visit the Van Gogh Huis just outside Emmen. It's the only house in the Netherlands which the famous Dutch artist lived in which is accessible to the public. The dolmen centre will then take you back to prehistoric times. Here, you will learn everything about the origins of the famous gravestones that you will see throughout the province.
Nature lovers are spoilt for choice with Emmen's numerous woods. Go for a walk in the Emmerdennen or cycle in the Valtherbos. Kids will love the Speelbos, a wood which is a natural playground where they can climb in trees, leap over ditches and build huts.
