A modern glassy dome enhances the iconic venue for the elegant Dortmund Opera House. Within the modernist structure are a graceful auditorium and stage upon which such important works as Wagner’s *Tristan und Isolde* have been performed. Check the schedule online and purchase tickets to one of the operatic shows. When you arrive, stand on the large pedestrian plaza and marvel at the greenish glass dome that has a metallic aesthetic reminiscent of a fly’s eye. See the structure at night, when its interior stands out for its illumination. Once inside the building, appreciate the airy and spacious design and climb the stairs for excellent views of the surrounding parks and landmarks. Grab a drink or snack from the elegant bar in anticipation of a performance. After taking your seat, look around and admire the majesty of the grand auditorium. It is made up of rows of stylish red seats, balconies and innovative light fittings. The opera house was built in 1966 to replace a previous incarnation, which was destroyed in World War I. The new structure’s opening show was Richard Strauss’ *Der Rosenkavalier*. Buy tickets online. Prices vary according to each show. The Dortmund Theater handles the operation of the venue, which was designed by architects Heinrich Rosskotten and Edgar Tritthart. Dortmund Opera House is on the southern side of the Dortmund city center. Ride a bus to the stop just outside the venue.
