Observe local life at this lively market, which sells everything from fresh fish and fruit to flowers.

Jostle with the crowds at this busy city market, which has been providing fresh produce to the people of Zagreb for more than 80 years. It's a popular spot for small traders and farmers who sell locally grown produce and homemade foods, including cheeses, fresh fish and organic fruit and vegetables. Coming here is a local ritual. Join the people of Zagreb in browsing the stalls, sampling artisan goods and experiencing local flavour.

First established in the 1930s by city authorities, this market has managed to survive despite decades of upheaval and unrest in Croatia. Come today and you'll find it heaving with locals, many of whom continue to do their grocery shopping here despite the increasing number of supermarkets in the city.

The market is spread between indoor, outdoor and covered lots. Start with the main outdoor square, where you'll find a colourful display of Croatian produce, with everything from potatoes and corn to figs and nuts. Take a detour down the side street leading toward Ban Jelačića Square to see the flower stalls. Awash with fragrant blooms and plants of all different sizes and colours, this part of the market is a definite highlight.

The covered sections are reserved for meat, fish and dairy products. Bargain with the vendors for the best price while picking up supplies for dinner. Find plenty of local ready-to-eat specialties here too. Look for stalls selling sir i vrhnje (cottage cheese and sour cream) and various smoked meats. The north end of the market is a good place to look for gifts for friends and family at home, with various souvenirs and keepsakes for sale, as well as delectable Croatian honey.

Dolac Market is located just north of Ban Jelačića Square. Take the tram to Trg J. Jelačića station to get here. The market takes place every day from early morning until mid-afternoon, with earlier closings on weekends. Saturdays are especially busy, so consider visiting during the week to avoid crowds.
