Marvel at the dynamism of nature at this waterfall, which is the highlight in a series of chutes along the river.

Dettifoss is a powerful tour de force with an extraordinary rush of foamy water spiraling down a cliff. The roaring waterfall drops a distance of 147 feet (45 metres) and has a width of 328 feet (100 metres). Hike around the picturesque region to reach the waterfall and admire its vastness.

Arrive at the impressive waterfall and descend the footpath on the eastern bank of the Jökulsá River. Take care not to stray from the path, as the area is slippery and dangerous. Rainbows often appear above the cliff when rays of sunshine combine with the spray of the water.

Capture photos of the rocky terrain engulfed by this sweeping waterfall. Marvel at its sheer brute force and size, as the water delves into the canyon below. The chute has a milky colour, which owes its hue to the sediments of the melted water of the Vatnajokull Glacier.

Cross the river to experience the view of the falls from various angles. Be careful, as there are no guardrails to prevent you from falling into the abyss. The base of the waterfall is inaccessible and hidden in a cloud of mist. The eastern bank is more popular because it has a more accessible road. Clamber over the rocks and mossy cliffs in the intriguing terrain that surrounds the waterfall.

Visit the nearby waterfall of Selfoss, a short distance upstream. Walk along the charming path that connects the two waterfalls. Downstream is the medium-sized Hafragilsfoss.

Dettifoss is part of the Vatnajökull National Park and is 73 miles (118 kilometres) east of the waterfall of Godafoss in northern Iceland. By car, it is 30 minutes south of Skinnastadur and 6 or 7 hours east of Reykjavik. Park at the lot on the eastern bank of the Jökulsá River from the road that passes through Hólssandur.
