![Nothing in St Petersburg is allowed to be built higher than the dome of St Isaac's Cathedral. As a result, you can see it's gleaming gold dome from nearly everywhere in the city. If you're staying at the Four Seasons, Astoria or W hotels then it's a great beacon to help you get back to them! 

It is worth getting a guide to explain what you are looking at inside as it's easy to miss so much of the rich history of the building, as you get carried away by the sheer scale of the cathedral.
