French Farmhouse

We had a great week in this lovely property. Excellent kitchen for cooking the local produce and a fantastic covered area for eating, relaxing, fun and games. Jo was a very good host. Would highly recommend for a family or group holiday.

Beautiful house

Brilliant area for our family and friends, house was perfect for activities and comfort. Happily spent time cooking and eating in around the lovely dining table… also breakfast outside. Trips to St Emillion for lunch and vineyard tours was e joyed by all. Jo a great and helpful host. Would definitely go back.

Perfect French Farmhouse Experience

Wonderful spacious home with multiple areas to spread multiple friend group around. Great amenities well equiped. BBQ and pool bonus. Great host-Joanna was super helpful and don’t forget to get her to explain about the history and work that has gone on in this well loved home. Thank you for a perfect stay. Only negative is we couldn’t stay longer!

Exquisite

It was the trip of a lifetime and our host, Jo, could not have been more fantastic! Attentive and knowledgeable about everything we needed. A perfect place for visiting the entire area. We stayed 5 weeks and had a total of 39 people stay during that time. Everyone loved the house. A perfect place for celebrating with family and friends. Jo suggested Chef Celine for special meals in the house and she was amazing. I did not want to leave. A truly magical place!

Our Family July 2023 Week

Jo is a super hostess and responded instantly to any requests. The house was very well equipped. The layout of the property was perfect for our needs: 2 grandparents, 4 other adults, 2 teenagers and 2 10-12 year-olds. Setting is lovely, on the river and 2 kayaks provided to enjoy. Highlight for us was the huge covered area. Housed the BBQ, a lounge area, dining table and games area. We spent most of the time in this great space. A very enjoyable family Break!

A great house for a family holiday.

The house was voted by all the family as the best large holiday home we have stayed in. We particularly loved the large covered terrrace. We were 3 generations including 6 teenagers, but the house was well equiped for children of all ages. All the rooms were beautufully furnished, thought we didn't have the need to use the formal dining room or sitting room. The access to the river at the bottom of the garden was a bonus, allowing canooing (canoos provided) and paddleboarding fun and it was wonderful to spot all the kingfishers who live there. Jo was very welcoming and friendly and I am sure would have been very helpful if we had needed anything.

Superb house, beautiful location. Perfect!

Where to start? The house is stunning and if anything the online listing undersells it. We visited as a 3-generation family group in summer 2024 with ages ranging from 15 to 77, everyone in the group fell in love with the place. The bedrooms are all beautifully presented, quiet & cool and the beds are super comfortable, the bathrooms are all well-equipped and the house was immaculately clean when we arrived. The kitchen too is excellent with plenty of room, crockery, utensils, cutlery etc to cater for the size of group the property can accommodate. We hardly used the dining room or sitting room, but again they looked lovely - stylish, comfortable and appropriately sized for the house. The outside space, where we spent the majority of our time, is amazing. Again there's plenty of room for every one, the pool is perfect - a real sun trap and a great size, and the river is lovely to swim in or kayak on. The outside cooking area made for sociable evenings (nobody left inside prepping dinner, when you decide to eat at home). For days out - Coutras is around a 30min train journey to Bordeaux and about the same car journey to St Emilion The owner, Jo, is a super host and we couldn't have felt more welcome. Can't wait to return. Thank you Jo!

Stay in Coutras

We stayed at La Vieille Ferme at the end of June 2025. We were four couples and an infant - myself, my wife, our three children and spouses. We loved the setting, the area, the house and the facilities. Jo was an excellent host and made us very welcome without intruding. We would happily stay again!

Wonderful holiday

We were a group of 8 adults and 3 children. The house was lovely with large rooms, ensuite bathrooms and a very large terrace that we used for meals and relaxation. The kitchen is very well-equipped. The swimming pool is great and was used a great deal. Overall, I can recommend this property for a great family holiday.

The Farmhouse

A wonderful 2 weeks with family in an iconic French farmhouse by the river. Fantastic weather and a swim in the pool everyday. There is so much more to Coutras than we expected, the surrounding areas and Chateaux’s everywhere made for a perfect holiday. And none more than our wonderful host Jo.

I absolutely loved the property. So much space for two families with grown up kids. Bedroom and bathroom each and all lovely. Fab kitchen and equipment. Glorious garden and pool area with river frontage for canoeing. Well equipped for all the activities and games and books galore. Jo the host is absolutely lovely and I can’t wait to revisit. A little drive to St Emilion and some wonderful restaurants.

Perfect for large family

Family of 12 - 3 generations including a toddler and 3 year-old. House much bigger than expected. Beds comfortable, plenty of bathrooms. Great outdoor spaces including swimming pool, huge terrace, and access to river for kayaking. All very secure for little people with gates and a walled pool area. Great cooking facilities and bbq. We loved our stay! It's rural, 20 min walk to nearest town. (Slight negative was poor internet/wifi). But truly a great place for a holiday!

La vielle ferme experience

Attractive, well laid out, thoughtfully equipped and catering superbly for the needs of our extended family (3 generations) through a range of options which allowed the younger members of our party to be as active as they wished whilst ensuring a more sedate alternative for the more mature. A great place to spend a holiday. The area itself also offers a breadth of experiences to suit all tastes whether they be cultural, wine (the vineyards of St Emilion are a short drive away) or family fun activities eg water parks, paddle boards, velorail all within 15 minutes of the property. Jo herself, was very supportive and always on hand to answer questions, the perfect hostess. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property.

Fabulous holiday home with everything we needed for a multi generational family holiday. Whilst the facilities were generous and the house full of homely and artistic touches, there was nothing stuffy or overly precious about it. We could relax and make it our home. Jo gave us a run through on arrival and was the perfect host, on hand for any queries but we could relax in the space without feeling overlooked. Kitchen was well stocked and there was a sensible approach to leaving foods and items that might be useful to the next holidaymakers. Mosquitos were an issue for us but we were prepared and came armed. We were also there during a heat wave so wrestled with opening the house up to let cool night air in whilst keeping the critters out. But the house is so well designed it did a great job and the downstairs rooms stayed cool for the most part. The pool is excellent, a great size, all the same depth so great for games and is saltwater so no issues with chemicals. We used it every day. 8 sunbeds were enough for our group as the kids never sat still and the umbrellas provided just enough shade. There were ample indoor games too for when it was too hot to be outside. Location is great. We visited St Emilion, Libourne and Guitre (pretty) Cognac and Bordeaux (lovely clean, well presented city) and of course Coutras. Very pretty countryside and several of us used the kayaks to see things from another angle. The large shaded terrace was just gorgeous and practical too.

Wonderful family holiday home

Thank you Jo & Martin for letting us stay in your beautiful home. We really appreciated your warm welcome, helpful timely responses to our pre arrival questions and abundant amounts of tourist info. We are a family of 8 adults and 1 x 8week baby and it was ideal, offering spacious accommodation inside & out (with a shady terrace for the baby) , a sea water swimming pool, which we used everyday, sun loungers, the table tennis, canoes, fairy lights & huge plancher (BBQ). We wanted for nothing! Loved the real McCoy ‘butchers block’ in the kitchen, all the cooking utensils, fridge space and crockery and you even had a very cute, family heirloom Moses basket! Well done & thank you. The story book of your restoration of this Vielle Ferme is inspirational! We do hope to return soon. Thank you again

Beautiful Rustic Chateau

Jo’s French Farmhouse has been lovingly updated from the 1800’s. The pool is a dream, the amenities were suberb (kayaks, ping pong, fishing), and the host is gracious and responsive. The landscaping is lovely and the house is on a river. On the downside we stayed in the house during an unexpected heatwave. So, we had to keep the windows closed during the day and the house stayed hot through the night. Jo has fans in each of the rooms to help with the heat. We had ours in front of the window and when the temperature outside cooled, our room cooled quite nicely. During the day we stayed in the pool to stay cool. Our second issue was the insects. In order to cool the rooms at night, we had to leave the windows and doors open and there are no screens. The rooms were full of spiders and mosquitoes. We used insect spray, but all had bites each morning. And, one of the rooms was invaded by wasps and not usable. If insects don’t bother you, the place is truly lovely. Jo lives next door and responded immediately to all of our concerns and sprayed for the wasps. We had a large group (11 people in 6 rooms), but 4 people ended up staying in a hotel in Saint Emillion for the week because of the bugs and heat. (One of the bathrooms filled with wasps through the night and we had to shut that room off to the rest of the house). If you are looking for Beautiful, Rustic, Historical, French Countryside, this is your place. Jo is also looking into screens which would be amazing!

Wir waren mit zwei Familien (11 Personen) da. Es gibt ausreichend Platz und vor allem die vielen Badezimmer sind toll. Die Ausstattung ist super, es hat uns an Nichts gefehlt. Vor Allem der Aussenbereich bietet jede Menge Möglichkeiten. Der Ort selber ist nicht so sehenswert. Wir hatten eine tolle Zeit. Alles war sauber und Jo war sehr zuvorkommend und hilfsbereit.
