Find hotels in Cortes from £38

The best area to stay in Cortes is the village centre, particularly around the Church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda.

This area is the heart of Cortes, offering convenience and a sense of local life. You'll find amenities within easy walking distance, including local shops, bakeries, and traditional Portuguese restaurants. The streets are generally quiet and well-maintained, providing a relaxing base for your stay.

Couples looking for a tranquil retreat will find the village centre ideal. It offers a chance to experience authentic Portuguese village life, with pleasant walks through the streets and opportunities to enjoy local cuisine. The proximity to the church and local cafes makes for a lovely, unhurried experience.

For families, staying slightly outside the immediate village centre, but still within easy reach, can offer more spacious accommodation options, such as guesthouses or villas with gardens.

For most visitors, the best time to visit Cortes is during the late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October) when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller.

During May and June, the countryside is verdant, and the temperatures are comfortably warm, typically ranging from 20°C to 25°C. This period is ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the region, such as the nearby Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, without the intense heat of mid-summer. It's also a lovely time for outdoor activities like hiking or visiting local vineyards.

September and October offer similar mild temperatures, often between 18°C and 23°C, and the landscape takes on beautiful autumnal colours. This is also harvest season for grapes, making it a particularly interesting time for those keen on wine tasting and experiencing local traditions. The sea is still warm enough for swimming along the nearby coast, which is about a 40-minute drive away.

While July and August are popular for those seeking hot weather and beach holidays, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C, it's also the busiest period.
