First impressions and curb appeal

The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. There was no "Do not disturb sign to hang on the door or sign to indicate maid service or not. Upon arrival a city police car patrolled the parking lot 3 times before we were checked in. Parking lot was littered upon arrival and only accumulated more during our 3 night stay. Due to COVID there was no access to lobby only security window used for night access. There were 2 large cargo shipping containers in the parking lot taking up 6 or 8 parking spaces. One had a mattress behind it I had asked for a deluxe room downstairs and was assigned a room upstairs. upon asking I was told there were only rooms with 2 beds downstairs. and it would cost more for those. It was difficult for us, as senior citizens, to climb the stairs with our luggage. One of the stairways had a handrail that was too close to the wall near the top (ouch). On the whole, the beds were comfortable and we did sleep well, but emotionally it was not a good feeling to be there.

Smelled strongly of cigarette smoke

We chose a non-smoking room but the moment we walked in it smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. The bed sheets and pillow covers smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. The towels were not entirely clean, one had a stain like if it was used for cleaning instead for guests. They did not give us enough towels for two people and no hair dryer available.

I've stayed at Motel 6s across the country. Never have I been so scared to take my dogs out. Random people knocking on my door and people fighting outside. I felt very unsafe, but the room was clean and like any other Motel 6.
