From mountains to beaches to historical cities, Turkey fuses some of the best of European and Asian culture in one breathtaking country. Whether you’re relaxing on the Turkish Riviera, exploring the Kackar Mountains or visiting cities like Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey is a fascinating place to see by hire car. It’s also a great location for reaching destinations like Cyprus and Bulgaria.
Depending on your preferred region to visit, Turkey has various airports including Istanbul Airport, Dalaman Airport and Antalya Airport, all with rental car facilities.
There are various hire car providers across Turkey to suit your budget and preferences, including Alamo, Budget and Enterprise. Many offer extras like free cancellation, unlimited mileage and shuttle services to your rental car.
If you’re arriving at Istanbul Airport then it’s a 32-mile journey by rental car to Istanbul, an ancient city on the boundaries of East and West. There you can cross the Bosphorus Bridge between Europe and Asia, explore the labyrinth market of the Grand Bazaar, or visit the 5th century Ottoman treasure house of the Topkapı Palace.
If you’re arriving at Dalaman Airport, then the Turkish Riviera is a short distance away. For instance, Patara Beach is a nine-mile journey by rental car. This golden stretch of sand is one of the longest in the area and has a large population of sea turtles, plus nearby Roman ruins. Bear in mind that you’ll have to pay a small fee to enter as it’s a protected area. The Lycian Way is a 39-mile journey from Dalaman Airport. You can drive along this historical route on the coast of Lycia in Southern Turkey, stopping off at various ancient ruins along the way.
Towering above the Black Sea are Turkey’s Kackar Mountains. The area is filled with alpine flowers and lakes, so is great for hiking and picnicking. The nearest airport is Trabzon, around a 180-mile drive away.
Bear in mind that there is a zero alcohol limit when driving in Turkey. Cars on roundabouts don’t have right of way and must give way to approaching vehicles. Police stops are common on motorways and your rental car may be routinely inspected. Make sure you familiarise yourself with Turkey’s driving laws before visiting.
