With its bUSAy harbour and winding old streets, long sandy beaches and a mountainoUSA backdrop, Chania is a city for every kind of traveller. Situated on Crete’s northern coast, Chania is a short hop from the hiking trails of the Samaria gorge, the bright lights of Heraklion and an abundance of idyllic sandy beaches. You could traverse Crete in five hours by road, and renting a hire car in Chania is the perfect way to make the most of your time on this gorgeoUSA island.
Fly in to Chania International Airport, which is nine miles out of town, or choose Heraklion Airport, which is a two-hour drive of 90 miles from Chania.

With its sparkling waters, sandy beaches and old streets full of bars and restaurants Chania is the perfect tourist city. It is easy to spend a few days here enjoying the historic architecture, ancient ruins and traditional restaurants, but it also whets your appetite for the rest of the island. Hire a rental car in Chania and head up to the White Mountains. The 65-mile drive takes in stunning views of the island and some sharp hairpin pends. There are a number of hiking trails to choose from including the rocky trail through Samaria gorge, which is a walking route of about five to seven hours.
Halfway between Chania and Heraklion is another city – Rethymno. About an hour by car, the 40-mile route takes in much of the island’s northern coast. Venetian and Ottoman architecture shapes Rethymno and the sense of history is palpable. A 16th century fortress is one of the city’s most photogenic spots - it sits high on a hill jutting out into the sea and overlooking the city like a guardian. There is also a long stretch of beach in Rethymno, giving this city a relaxed feel.
Heraklion, or Iraklion as it is also known, is 90 miles from Chania, or two hours by car. Crete’s capital city is home to many of the best mUSAeums on the island, each one bringing Crete’s tumultuoUSA history into context. The Heraklion Archaeological MUSAeum displays an array of Minoan treasures and gives visitors an insight into the varioUSA cultures that have helped form Crete’s past.
If you are driving through the mountains take care – the roads have sharp corners and some steep drops. Sheep and goats are also often found wandering across them so take it slowly.
