Solar powered cottage at lake, with dock, on private 300 acre timber preserve
Note: This small cottage is secluded and OFF-GRID. Solar power is dependent on sunlight.
Welcome to Soudan Cottage. This modern, off-grid retreat combines private and secluded lake access featuring a state-of-the-art dock, two coves and a large pine forest teeming with natural visual beauty and wildlife. Ten minutes from the charming, lakeside town of Clarksville, VA, and a 90 minute drive from Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC, the cottage is ideal for a short sabbatical, a romantic weekend, or an outdoorsman's getaway. Best suited for one or two people. If you'd like more time to read, talk, think and relax; if you cherish a brisk walk in the woods or a cool dip in a placid lake; if you seek a night sky full of stars and the sound of crickets, then you've found the right place. Soudan Cottage might be best understood by what it isn't. It isn't a place stocked with television sets, video games, telephones, stereos and computers. You can bring those things if you need them, but otherwise you'll have just the basics here, and maybe a little lower blood pressure.
The eco-friendly cottage, constructed in 2013 by contractor Steve Storm, mixes contemporary design and amenities with antique furnishings and Americana charm. Every inch of the 700 square feet is efficiently utilized with nothing wasted. Soudan Cottage was sited and designed with sustainability and a simpler, more relaxed existence in mind. Solar panels cover the southern roof line and store energy in hand made battery lockers. Ceramic tile floors throughout the downstairs kitchen, bath, and sitting area provide natural cooling in warm weather. Pine flooring in the upstairs bedroom/study offers comfort year round. Mr. Slim climate units can be run during the day - but may drain the batteries overnight if overused. A backup generator can provide power if the sun is insufficient. the cottage was situated to take advantage of prevailing summer breezes aided minimally by small fans. Cool night air can be circulated through the cottage's 13 windows via the upstairs ceiling fan.
The kitchen minimizes waste with an energy efficient refrigerator, and a propane powered oven and range.
An easy-to-read energy monitor in the kitchen displays how much solar power is stored, and how much is being transferred, so that usage can be managed smartly according to the time of day and the current weather conditions. The cottage utilizes a modern septic system and deep well.
The property, which includes 300+ acres of pine and mixed forest and more than 1000 feet of secluded shoreline access on Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Lake), is one of the largest privately-owned lake forest tracts in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Located five miles from the Lake Country regional airport in Mecklenburg County, VA, you can be casting a line into the renowned tournament fishing waters of Kerr Lake within minutes of landing. Hunters will find deer, turkey, rabbit, and other game abundant in the private forest and the adjoining Corp of Engineers easement land. And nature lovers in need of a respite from the city will enjoy seemingly endless natural trails ideal for hiking, cycling, or bird watching.

Cute little house. Perfect dock for our boat. Nice and quiet! We had a great time. You need to be prepared though if the power goes out. House runs on solar power. We had it happen twice during our weekend stay. Not much full sunlight for a few days before.
Very secluded and private. Cabin was very nice, comfortable for 2 people.Walk to dock through woods isnt too bad. Weather was sunny our whole trip so did not have any issues with power, generator did kick in every morning for a little bit. Make sure you bring flaslights or some other outdoor lighting, especially if you have dogs because it is very dark at night with only the light from the porch available. Luckily we were prepared. The wifi wasnt working and didnt find it until the last day but i brought my tmobile mifi device and had internet the whole time. Didn't find the need to bother the host about it. All in all worth the trip.
Amazing stay!! So clean and perfect for an off the grid getaway. Great fishing from the dock and relaxing bonfire area! Boat launch and Bobcat’s Bait and Tackle nearby for convenience Woodbine Vineyards and Bugg Lake Brewery are great little spots to hang out too! Highly recommend and hope to come back soon!
What a cute little cabin in the woods! Exactly as described. The amazing weather made sitting on the dock was breath taking. If you are looking for seclusion this is it. We are very happy customers.
Whst a hidden gem. We stayed here because we have relatives in the area. We had much needed peace and quiet. We brought a dvd player beacause not used to no background noise. The road to the house is long and secluded. Very nice place to stay.
Third times the charm! This is our 3rd year staying at this property and we plan on more years to come. If you’re looking for simplicity and solitude, this property does not disappoint!
If you want to get away from it all, no phone, no TV this is it. Small walk to the fishing pier and bait shop is close by. We had to leave early because Mother Nature caused some issues but definitely would love go come back again. Great place recharge, and remember to bring OFF bug spray and citronella candles.
Very remote, which is what we wanted. The Cabin was quaint and perfect size for 2 plus dog. Loved the trail to the dock and all the surrounding woods. We enjoyed quiet reflective time for reading, but also the Lake was awesome for kayaking and fishing. Weather was a little rough but still had a chance to enjoy the firepit and cook out. Overall, very nice place and may be looking to return in the fall when it is cooler.
If you read and loved the description of this place, you will, indeed, love this place. It's exactly what's advertised and it has been the perfect getaway for my husband and me twice now. Its a gorgeous location with ample fishing, reading, lazing opportunities. The cabin is adorable, the bed is comfy, the fire pit is awesome! There's so much to love about this place. We will be back every time we get the opportunity.
Great experience, it was neat to be off grid and running on just solar and battery power. The cottage was cozy and the AC worked great to combat the high heat wave we visited during.
Only downside were the neighbors shooting off fireworks on July 4th. Obviously not the fault of the host, but it did intrude a bit on the experience (and upset our dog).
Our stay was absolutely amazing! I enjoyed no cell service! We had a lot of fun with our floats we brought to relax on the water! My dog even enjoyed running wild and playing in the water. We for sure will be return guests. It was very close to our family we were there to visit in Oxford, NC. The only thing was having a hard time finding the dumpster since the one by the airport isn’t there anymore.
If you want to truly get away from it all, including cell service, this is the place. We heard and saw no one for the first two days of our stay (Wed & Thurs.). On Friday and Saturday morning, several boats of fisherman came by. Our two dogs were in heaven being off leash. No TV, no phones, no internet...just stars, sounds of nature (heron, osprey, woodpeckers, fish jumping, owls, bats). Cabin is small but cozy and comfortable. No generator use during our stay which was great!
Very clean for middle of the woods. Super private. Property was cleared of brush and trails were clean. Owner even cleared some trails for our jeep to go four wheeling
My son and I were in town for a fishing tournament on Kerr Lake. The property was perfect for us. It is definitely off the beaten path, but we loved it. Couldn't use the dock because the water was too high in the lake, but we loved it.
Quiet cottage in the woods, solar powered with a generator. Very peaceful and relaxing. Walk to the dock is fairly short. We brought a collapsible wagon, to tote chairs, cooler, and fishing rods , had no issues with the wagon on the trail. Highly recommend! If you are looking for peace and quiet and a place, this is your place! We will be back
This was our 2nd stay at the cabin and we will be back. The cabin is comfortable and clean. Great private access to the lake and a private dock. Our dogs loved the freedom.
