About this property
Cozy comfortable cottage by the sea and water, surrounded by fields and space
Our family have owned Humperdink, our cottage, since 1964. It is a few miles from the village of St Osyth adjacent to the nature reserve of Lee Over Sands, with a mainly shingle and sand beach, depending on the tide, creek and surrounding marsh land.
We brought our cottage into the 21st century in 2015, retaining its charm and character while adding some new creature comforts and mod cons, including gas central heating with radiators and running hot water (which was a first for us, never having this luxury at our cottage before when we were children or with our children!) to make any stay a memorable and pleasurable whatever the weather, or time of year.
We have no hidden extras with our home, bed linen, towels, and tea towel are all included in the price. All pillows and mattresses have protector covers and are non allergic.
Check in is 4 pm and check out is 11 am.
The surrounding area is fields, however the creek, sea and beach are just over the sea wall, where you can walk, enjoy the views, swim in the water, kyake or paddle board or you can just stay at our cottage, sit in the front garden or sit on the decking at the back of the property and listen to the wildlife right on your doorstep, away from the hustle and bustle of reality. Deer have been seen near our cottage as well as hares, foxes as well lots of owls and multiple birds. Books for identifying the birds are available, should you need them.
Your dog is very welcome, please just notify us about this when you book. We only allow 2 dogs per booking and there is a charge of £25 per dog per stay. We ask that you clean up after your dog and also that you don’t allow your dog to sleep on the beds please. The garden is fully enclosed.
The cottage has two bedrooms upstairs, the front bedroom that has views to the sea and has a wooden Shaker Kingsize bed and a second bedroom at the back with a wooden double bed, as well as a single pine bed, so this room can actually sleep three. This room has spectacular views across the fields and also to the sea, where you can see the Wind Turbines near Clacton, quite lovely at night with all the twinkly lights. You can also see the sunrise from the back of the property, which is superb as well as the sunset from the front of the cottage.
There is a room downstairs, at the back of the property, that can either be a bedroom or a playroom. It has a comfortable double sized sofa bed from Ikea. This room has french doors which open out onto a decking area, complete with chairs and a dining table during the summer and a picnic bench during the winter months, all ready for you to enjoy your meal at any time of the day or drink a la fresco. In the summer you wake on a lovely sunny morning with the sun streaming in, encouraging you to open the french doors and take in the peace and solitude of the area.
We have provided an extra fridge in the garage for your bottles that can be turned on when you need it There is also a smaller fridge/freezer for your food which is left on all the time. The tumble dryer in the garage, next to the fridges, is NOT TO BE USED by guests please, it is only to be used by our cleaner.
Our cottage has a delightful open and sociable living space where you can cook, eat and socialize. There is a fitted, fully equipped kitchen, with a washing machine, electric oven and gas hob, slow cooker, air fryer, George Foreman Grill, microwave, kettle, toaster and dolce gusto coffee machine.
In the living space there is a SMART TV/DVD player/ radio in the comfy sitting area and a dining room table with 7 chairs, should they be needed. The bathroom has a shower over the bath. This runs off the hot water, provided by the combi boiler. The heating is also a smart system, called NEST and can easily be adjusted with the thermostat controller on the table under the lamp in the sitting room.
We now have superfast fibre broadband. This is left plugged into the same plug as the toaster / microwave and the router is on the shelf above the microwave. You will be given the password at the cottage and in your welcome email which also gives you the keysafe code.
The unique location on the Essex coast, which incidentally is one of the driest places in the UK, is adjacent to the Essex Wildlife Trust EWT (www.essexwt.org.uk) reserve on Colne Point. This bird reserve has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) affording habitat for many different birds both resident and migratory. As a guest you are allowed access to the beaches and wildlife reserve, which could be described a very exclusive experience as only members and residents are usually are able to go on this reserve.
Over the sea wall is the creek which is obviously tidal and the sea which lend themselves to some kayaking or paddle boarding which is a lot of fun and often you are on your own on the water.
London is only 2 hours away by car and there is a main train station at Colchester which is approximately 25 mins away from Humperdink. However, there are smaller train stations at Gt Bentley (only 10 - 15 mins away from cottage) and Clacton.
The nearest village is St Osyth and it's only 10 minutes by car and this has all been described in the location part of these details. There is the Curve Wave Park in St Osyth where you can have some fun on their paddle boards and an inflatable ride for anyone over 8. You can also learn to water ski.
We feel that our cottage offers rather a unique experience and one that we never tire of, several of our guests have returned for a visit, which is rather lovely. There is something for everyone, of all ages, to enjoy even if it is just sitting enjoying the english weather and scenery.
The sea air will also help you to have a really good night's sleep and should you be lucky you will see the most beautiful sunrise and sunset.
Don't forget your wellies or old pair trainers we have some binoculars in one of the bedrooms upstairs for you to enjoy. Crab lines, buckets and nets are all provided in the garage! There is a Wendy house and a Cozy coupe as well as other toys. There is also a BBQ in the garage but we do not provide the coals for the BBQ or the bait for the crab lines.
As mentioned before we will send you an email with the keysafe code, more information about our cottage and the area and some also some fun things to do should you want to do them.
However, the beach is nearly always deserted and this may be just what you are after.

Diana and Simon's house was perfect for our extended family stay. It was very well equipped, bright and comfortable, and a perfect place to have as a base while we attended a wedding.
We wanted to be somewhere quiet and relaxing so our nervous dog wouldn't be disturbed by the fireworks! Humperdink was the ideal location! Although the weather wasn't great the cottage was cosy and warm.
The welcome basket was a nice thought too, thank you
We had a wonderful stay at Humperdinck. The house was cute, clean and comfortable but it was the location that made our stay! The house is located on the edge of marshlands (full of samphire). In the field over the hedge were cows which my son found endlessly entertaining but frustrating…he wanted to feed them. One highlight was when a cow (we named her Betty) escaped onto the road and had to be coaxed back into the field by the farmer.Humperdinck is ideal if you’re looking for somewhere away from it all but within driving distance of pretty villages, seaside resorts and cultural hubs (Colchester).I would say the beach isn’t terribly accessible for those used to city living (tide times?!! Welly boots!) but that didn’t distract from everything else the place has to offer. All in all if you’re a nature and sea lover looking for a peaceful but comfortable base - you’ve found the place!
Very nice home in a beautiful area on a nature reserve. The house had everything we could possibly need, including a welcome pack full of goodies! Communication with the owner was easy, and a lot of information about the house and the area was shared. The key was easily accessible in a key lock outside.

Amazing holiday
We stayed in Humperdinck for 2 nights and what a lovely little house it is! We found it very homely and clean. The neighbours were lonely and gave us ideas of places to visit. We loved playing with the games and enjoyed having dinner in the garden! Thank u for letting us stay in ur lovely home x
We had some wet weather and some dry sunny weather.
Humperdink is perfect for both.
The cottage is more than adequately equipped for a relaxing stay and is very welcoming.
We had some very enjoyable walks exploring around the area .
Will definitely recommend a stay and hope ti come back in the future.

Beautiful,comfortable cotage
The cottage is very nice and comfortable . It is situated in a beautiful and peaceful location. The area is very safe for children and the lambs are a great attraction for them( Children were helping to feed the lambs ). The area is great for walking and exploring. The owners are very friendly and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. Thank you. We had a great time.
We stayed for a few days in this house and found it very clean, well equipped, comfortable and just what we wanted. It is probably a rare find on this coast. We walked to the beach most evenings to watch the sunset (about 20 minutes stroll across the nature reserve) and enjoyed the special quality of peace that surrounded us all through our stay. Breakfasts on the patio and suppers on the bench at the front. Very nice neighbours - not intrusive - just friendly with lots of advice to offer if you needed it. The road down to the cottage needs care when driving, but it fine if you negotiate it sensibly. Altogether a beautiful holiday and I would recommend it to anyone.

What a find! Unique and Quirky
The owners were very prompt with all email contacts and very helpful with information supplied about the property. The photos on the website give a great indication of the remoteness of Humperdink- two miles from a road, so incredibly peaceful. I loved the wooden floors and tiny stairs which added to a "beach house" charm and the squishy sofas were welcome when we did get a day's bad weather. We were there for the hot Bank Holiday and the sunset was stunning.
I have rented many holiday lets and Humperdink is certainly the most impressively equipped I've stayed in .
The owners are gracious about dogs who are welcome everywhere except on the beds. The garden isn't enclosed and next door have sheep and cats but all of this is made clear on booking. My dog had a lovely time.
Overall I wish I'd booked for longer just to laze around the cottage!
Cute cottage in such a peaceful location and only minutes walk from the sea. We had a relaxing time and Reg our dog loved all the new places to explore. Hosts kept in regular contact throughout our stay which was reassuring.
Toller Aufenthalt in schöner Umgebung – gerne wieder!
Easy process, great house, cosy, warm, brilliantly equipped. The views are brilliant, big skies, abundant wildlife, the area is so quiet I forgot everything that I was stressed about. Lovely decor too. Overall a really relaxing stay in a great house.
We spent a very enjoyable few days at the cottage. Although the weather was cold outside, the cottage was warm and comfortable. It is clean and well-maintained and has the feel of a well-loved home rather than a holiday let. We enjoyed some excellent walking in the area and would love to return in the summer months.
We had a lovely stay in Humperdink. The cottage is very nice and comfortable and the location is stunning and so peaceful. As a frazzled NHS worker this was just the relaxing break that I needed.
Cosy, comfortable get-away in the middle of the salt-marshes
The property is small but cosy and well appointed, with everything you need for a comfortable stay, whatever the weather. The location is peaceful and very much "away from it all", despite the preponderance of caravan sites all around, nothing but wide open space as far as the eye can see. The owners are very helpful and provided lots of useful information about the local area as well as the property.
A great property in a great location So good to get away after so long and a truly tranquil location which is just what was needed Excellent communication and information on the property and local area from the owners
Highly recommended
Thank You
