Hotel exceptionally well placed, with great views of the bay from the superior room we had. The facilities in the room were perfectly adequate, and the staff were very nice though there was a language barrier; they spoke very little English (and our Spanish was terrible). The bed was nice, the room was clean, and the fridge was serviceable. Shower was excellent! Also breakfast had a nice selection of continental choices, just missing some eggs. However, the A/C was practically nonexistent. Also for a 4* hotel I would have expected complimentary drinking water stocked in our rooms, considering you can' t drink from the taps. And lastly and most important of all (hence the 1* on facilties), the balconies were simply unsafe to use. The fixings on both balconies were all corroded, the barriers were flexible and appeared to not have been updated to more recent safety standards - ie, above waist height. I would not trust them to take my weight or protect me if I tripped (and our room was very high up!), which is a shame because the view was as I said fantastic. Please please update the balconies (and put some water in the rooms).

They jacked up the rates to take advantage of travelers for the eclipse. When requesting to cancel because I couldn't make it, they refused. They could have easily re-rented the room.

Can a 1 1/2 star property offer 4 star service? Yes Hotel Begonia is an example of a facility that is absolutely in need of serious renovation but is complimented by an extraordianry staff and an exceptional location in the heart of downtown Gijon. B&B hotels should be ashamed of the condition and lack of amenities offered but they have the right people and thats a good start. Be prepared for no A/C (ask for a fan), old outdated rooms and a very average breakfast. But Fernanda and staff will make the most of their facilities.
