Chemiemuseum Basel

Stayed here overnight during our journey back home from Italy to Scotland. Lovely hotel, great location in the characterful town of Thann, good parking. Our room was very nice and had good views of the grounds. The bed and bathroom were also good and the level of fittings and fixtures in the room was better than average. We were delighted to discover that we were staying in the same room as occupied by General De Gaulle in 1945! Our dinner in the restaurant was very good and the local wine excellent, however a bit on the expensive side. There is also a very nice resident dog! Breakfast was good with some spectacular pastries but we were a little disappointed not to be served with real coffee but with the usual dispensed from the ubiquitous coffee machine!

My husband and I were staying in the V251 room for 3 nights. It was newly redecorated and was great. We had a corner room so the view was nice and the room was very quiet. A nice feature that I wish we had in Canada is the shutters that roll down on the outside and open and close. Great for choice of lighting for sleeping. The breakfast buffet was very nice and the prompt service was superb. Each time coffee was poured it came with a greeting and warm smile. I wish I had caught the servers name…. There were offers of a true German breakfast of cold cults, selection of cheeses, fruit, cereals, yogurt…. Bacon, sausages, eggs, soft boiled, scrambled and fried. A beautiful selection of breads, croissants, jams and honey. Front desk was very very helpful at check in time as well as providing information of the tram and locations in Basel. You receive a complimentary tram and bus pass of the city…. As well as discounts for various locations in the city. There is a lovely memorabilia hall way in the lower hallway that shows how the hotel functioned in the 1900’s. I found it very interesting…. There are wedding invitations framed on the walls showing the menu … very elaborate feasts were provided….. when we were in Lucerne we say another Schweizerhof …. I am pretty sure we stayed in the original. Please give this hotel a look at when booking in Switzerland… it is a great location… right next to the Train station… very useful for travelling to different locations.
