No matter where you're coming from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you're prepared. We've compiled a list of handy tips that will get your San Cristobal escape started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The secret to having a hassle-free flight experience is to pack ahead. First up, the essentials: passport, boarding pass, cash and vital medications. Next, bring on board items that'll help keep you busy, like some electronic gadgets or a few magazines. It's also smart to pack your chargers, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earphones. Last but not least, be sure to pop in toiletries like a toothbrush, deodorant and a clean T-shirt.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Double-check that you don't have a sharp object lurking in your carry-on luggage. Other restricted items include flammable or explosive substances, such as fuel and matches, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Your main aim is to be as comfortable as possible. Opt for shoes that are easy to pull on and off, dress in loose, natural fibers and remember to take a jacket in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To minimize your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks or tights and do gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat.

It's all about being prepared. We've pulled together some top tips for a hassle-free trip through airport security. Watch out San Cristobal, here you come:

• Security personnel first need to make sure that you have a valid ID and travel documents before anything else. Have them ready for inspection.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on luggage will be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, take off anything that is likely to trigger the alarm. Personal belongings like your belt, jacket and earphones need to go through the machine.
• Electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Any liquids or gels, such as perfume or hand cream, that you want to take on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• It's also possible you'll be required to remove your shoes for scanning, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a clever idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
