Wherever you're coming from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you're well organised. We've made a list of handy tips that will help get your Comus holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The trick to having an awesome flight experience is to pack in advance. Start with the essentials: passport, official ID, cash and important medications. Next, bring items that'll help keep you occupied, like your laptop or a few magazines. It's also smart to bring your chargers, a neck pillow and a pair of earphones. Finally, don't forget to pop in toiletries like a toothbrush, cleansing wipes and a clean T-shirt.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp objects, like your treasured pocket knife, and dangerous products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, flares and matches, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Choose comfort over style. Prepare for changes in temperature by donning layers, and wear closed-toe, flat shoes like slip-ons.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-haul flights. It's the result of blood clotting due to poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.

A little pre-planning before you get to the airport can make your getaway to Comus quick and painless. We've rounded up some handy tips and tricks for a swift journey past security:

• Security personnel first need to determine that you have a valid ID and travel documents before anything else. Have them within easy reach, ready for inspection.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Remove anything on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as bulky coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• Your electronic gadgets like laptops and phones will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Remove all liquids and gels from your hand luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you valuable minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on shoes usually aren't.
• Sharp items such as knives and scissors are not allowed in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them safely away in your checked suitcase.
