Frequently asked questions
Book with confidence
Book a flight to the Bernese Alps, a beautiful region of Switzerland that is famed for its adventure sports, cosmopolitan resorts and snow-capped peaks.
Nearest International Airport to the Bernese Alps
Bern Airport is the nearest airport to most resorts, but has a relatively small range of direct flights from the UK. These depart from London City Airport and take around 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a brief stop at Basel-Mulhouse Airport – this is only to pick up passengers, and you won’t need to disembark or change planes.
At Bern Airport you'll have access to a restaurant, café, free Wi-Fi, and limited duty-free shopping. The airport is served by a number of regional airlines and has direct links to several other major European cities.
Flying to the Bernese Alps via Zurich
Zurich Airport is the second nearest to the Bernese Alps region, and is larger than Bern Airport, offering a wider choice of airlines and UK departure points. If you’re on a budget, flying this route will allow you to use low-cost carriers such as easyJet and Ryanair; equally, if you’re travelling on business you’ll have access to a wider range of premium fares and lounges.
Driving to the Bernese Alps
You can hire a car from several rental firms at Bern Airport, then drive to Thun in just 25 minutes, Interlaken in about 45 minutes, or the Jungfrau area in around an hour. It's the quickest way to explore this region's glorious landscapes. If you’re flying via Zurich the transfer to the Bernese Alps is longer, but still manageable – it takes around 1 hour 45 minutes to drive to Interlaken.
Public Transport to the Bernese Alps
To get to Interlaken from Bern Airport by public transport, take a bus to Rubigen railway station and a train to Interlaken Ost railway station, changing at Thun. The journey time is about 1 hour 25 minutes, and you'll fall in love with the scenery of Lake Thun on the way. From Zurich Airport, Interlaken is just over two hours away by train.
To reach Gstaad from Bern Airport, take a bus to Belp station then a train with changes at Thun, Spiez and Zweisimmen, or Münsingen and Zweisimmen. If you are staying in the Jungfrau area in winter, you can board the Winter Bus from Bern airport to the family friendly ski resorts of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald.
Getting Around Without a Car
It’s surprisingly easy to explore the Bernese Alps without a car. Purchase the Regional Pass, valid from around late April to October, and get unlimited travel on trains, buses, boats, cable cars, and special services such as the mountain train to the magnificent 4,454-metre-high Jungfraujoch.
Fly to the Bernese Alps for Year-Round Leisure
Try some cheese-tasting, or fine-dine in one of Gstaad's glamorous restaurants. See the dramatic waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, or book a thrilling paragliding lesson over the amazing Bernese Alps scenery. Go hiking from Schynige Platte to Grindelwald First and see the iconic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. On a hot day, have a swim in Lake Thun or Lake Brienz.
For winter sports, fly to the Bernese Alps between December and early April, when mountain resorts have excellent skiing and snowboarding. For high-altitude hikes, family-oriented outdoor festivals, and boat excursions, fly between June and September.
