Chaco (province)
The capital city is filled with sculptures, while rivers and meteorites have sculpted their own designs on the otherworldly countryside.
Chaco has some of Argentina’s most dramatic landscapes and varied terrain. It lies in a large lowland plain in the Gran Chaco region, adorned with scenic rivers, valleys and even meteorite impact craters. Get to know the proud traditions of the tranquil towns and explore the nature reserves.
Resistencia, the province’s capital, has all types of intriguing sculpture galleries and parks. At the heart of the local culture is the Museo de la Escultura. Inspect the sculptures in the park and stay for the musical fountain display in the late afternoon.
For a greater insight into local customs and history, visit the Museo del Hombre Chaqueño. Study tools used for hunting and fishing and learn about the eclectic 20th-century immigration that shaped today’s city. Make your way to the Plaza 25 de Mayo and relax in its glorious botanical garden.
Go to the northeastern part of Resistencia to cross the enormous General Belgrano Bridge over the Paraná River to reach Corrientes. Drive north along the river to the border of Paraguay.
From Resistencia, travel northwest along a highway that runs through Colonia Popular, La Escondida and Colonia Elisa. Stop at some of these towns and get to know the locals.
The road eventually leads to the Parque Nacional Chaco, one of the region’s highlights. Walk along trails meandering between mountains and savanna. Try to spot monkeys, anteaters and tapirs, among other animals. Continue west to the Campo del Cielo site for its iron meteorites.
Notice that summers are typically hot and dry, although conditions are more humid in the east. Temperatures can fall below freezing in winter.
The province is tucked away in the northeastern part of Argentina, touching the Paraguayan border. Fly to Resistencia International Airport from Buenos Aires or Córdoba and rent a car to get around. Travel to nearby provinces, such as Salta, Formosa and Corrientes.
Traditional museums and art galleries adorn the main city, while the national park showcases Chaco’s rich biodiversity.
