Perched atop Mount Titano’s highest point is a citadel with magnificent views and a museum with displays of antique firearms.

The Cesta Tower (Seconda Torre) is an impressive fortified tower that forms part of San Marino’s ancient bulwark. It dates back to the 13th century and has served as both an observation tower and prison. The tower stands at 2,477 feet (755 metres) and marks the pinnacle of Mount Titano. Walk between Cesta Tower and the city’s other towers via a winding panoramic pathway.

Climb up the cobblestone lane and gaze in awe as you draw nearer to the tower’s castle-like structure. Marvel at how it sits precariously on a cliff edge and looks out across rolling green countryside.

It’s possible to walk across the battlements via well-maintained paths to lookout platforms. Have your camera ready to snap postcard-perfect shots of San Marino’s city centre and the surrounding mountain ranges. Spot the Guaita Tower (Prima Torre) and use the public-use binoculars to get magnified views of nearby villages.

The tower is home to the Museum of Ancient Arms (Museo delle Armi Antiche), which has four rooms with exhibits of weaponry from the 15thto 20th centuries. See collections of breastplates, ceremonial spears, coats of arms and war axes. Look for a Bavarian breech-loading rifle and intricately engraved swords. Don’t miss the array of Austrian, English and French-made firearms.

The Cesta Tower is about a 10-minute uphill walk from Liberty Square. Parking is available, for a fee, at the base of Mount Titano. From the parking lot, follow the path travelling up to the tower. Combine your visit with an exploration of Guaita Tower and Montale Tower, accessible via the picturesque mountain path. Enjoy additional marvellous views before exploring Guaita Tower’s belfry, chapel and prison.

Cesta Tower and the Museum of Ancient Arms are open daily, except for select public holidays. The admission fee grants entry to the tower and museum. Ask about combined tickets, which include admission to Guaita Tower and other state museums. Visit the Musei di Stato’s official website for more information.
