Wish we had stayed longer
what a great pousada in central Portugal. makes a great stop if traveling from the north to the Algarve. i certainly wish that time allowed a longer stay. the village is quite small and the hotel is surrounded by farm land. the building was originally a monastery in the 1400's. it is a national monument. stone walls, high ceilings, and very atmospheric. property includes a small museum & panels with building history. staff at check in was so welcoming. the desk man insisted on carrying our bags not only into the hotel, but to our room on the second floor. miraculously there is an elevator. the hotel feels huge due to the many lounging areas for guests and the maze of passages. lovingly cared for grounds and a pool prefect for relaxing. furnishings are modern. also a spa we did not visit. our room was a superior historic room with a canopied double bed, two chairs, and a desk. the bath was quite large with double sink marble counter and large shower. nice amenities including, robe, slippers, and lotion. large dining room for dinner and a well done breakfast spread. our dinner was hit and miss as most dishes had some type of issue we disliked-overcooked pasta and shrimp, soggy & barely warm tempura beans, etc. if you need it wi-fi was strong. very quiet at night and outdoor lighting creates a beautiful atmosphere. but if you prefer to sleep in, be prepared for the roosters, etc. to wake you early. we feel lucky to have found such a splendid place and highly recommend it.

Other than a hard bed, absolutely awesome!
This place is amazing. It's a small town and kind of isolated, but the Pousada is the real draw. It's a fantastic building and staying in it was a highlight of our trip. The staff were all extremely polite and helpful. They have parking right in front - it's even covered. Our room had a very authentic feel but with modern amenities. The WiFi was great and the shower was fine as well. We ate dinner and breakfast in the hotel and really enjoyed both. We also utilized the jacuzzi in the spa and that was fun. The pool was chilly so we didn't dive in. All of the areas have a great feel to them, especially at night when everything is lit up. The TV had lots of channels, many in English as well. The only thing keeping this place from being perfect was the bed - it was a rock! I know it's a matter of preference, but if you're from the US and used to pillow top mattresses or memory foam, it's going to hurt.

Good but could be better
At first sight this hotel looks amazing and it should be. Sadly it fails on a few fronts. The staff are not overly charming and at times are dismissive. They seem to be over worked or just not on top of things. The pool gets pretty crowded and there aren’t enough sun-beds for everyone. The outdoor cafe is located underneath the brutalist extension to the property and has the feel of an underground car park with very little charm. The bar looks more like a kiosk and has very little in common with a 4 star hotel. The bedrooms are large and comfortable but they need a little care and repair. The restaurant is good with a great choice of local cuisine.

Modern Pousada based on 14th Century Monastery.Rooms in new wing are large with a balcony . Excellent breakfast though the food in the restaurant in the evening was only average . Public rooms are part of the old building and are wonderful. The monastery church is amazing! Easy to find, free parking, short drive to Portalegre and Marvão. Staff were very good and all spoke good English. The pool looks lovely but we stayed in November!

Extraordinary location in centre of nicely maintained village. Exceptional renovation/ rehabilitation of historic chapel/ fortress into a modern hotel with restaurant and spa, by using the old structures and adding contemporary architecture wing. Seamless transition between the two areas. Part of the old building is organized as a museum. Not wheelchair accessible. Good quality restaurant, nice swimming pool, maybe too busy in summer. Good service overall.

A nights stay in a genuine castle, what an experience. We stayed in the old part & were thoroughly enchanted with our room. We might have been disappointed though if we had ended up in the modern extension. Pool was excellent, although the spa was small & there was no gym. There was a 3 euro fee each to see the church part of the castle, a little niggle there. Good parking, friendly & attentive staff & great cuisine. Every bit as good as the Paradors in Spain.

Step back in history.
The Monastery is well worth visiting, but it is a long drive from Lisbon and does not have a direct connection to Algarve, our next connection. It is a step back in time and a unique place to stay. Excellent food and friendly staff.

Found this to be so-so, definitely not up to the standard of the rating and good reviews. It's more like 3.5 start than five star. Room was dated and not very comfortable, bed and pillows hard. The pool area is nice but there is one toilet there in the back of a dirty storage room. Garden by the pool is nice and well maintained. The photos online are somewhat misleading. Staff are very nice, helpful and friendly. The beakfast was good but again it would not be five star standard. Maybe things are better in high season when there are more guests / facilities.

Unique and beautiful property.
The building is beautifully restored. The pool is a gorgeous place to spend the afternoon. The staff is courteous and helpful. We found the restaurant short of service staff. And the nearby town did not seem to have much to offer. This is a great place to just relax for a few days.

A really marvellous, impressive historic building which has a tastefully modernised interior. A hotel which is full of character. Friendly helpful welcome. Good breakfast and dinner. It is nice have very good regional dishes . Excellent, Professional, friendly staff throughout. An excellent hotel! My only criticism is that the WiFi keeps dropping out.

Charm, Mystery and Comfort in a Gothic Monastery
Our three-night stay at the Pousada was a magnificent experience. The hotel is a gothic Maltese Knights monastery converted into luxurious lodgings with the charm and mystery of the original building fully preserved. We wanted to splurge, so we got a suite for an additional total of 100 euros and we loved it. The room was beautiful and modern, the common areas (which are numerous) are comfortable and charming, the location is good for visiting Castello do Vide and Portalegre. The staff is exceptional -- both at the reception and in the restaurant. And food is exquisite. We are vegans but we found a great variety of dishes, some of them specially adjusted for us by the chef. If you head for East Central Portugal, the Pousada is a must.

Great Pousada with character at peaceful location
Yet another Pousada that has been thoughtfully modernised and tastefully fused modern themes and facilities with the original fabric of the buildings. We did not make use of the spa on this occasion but both these and the outdoor pool area were excellent. The restaurant and service was first rate. A good menu selection offering local specialities is available as is a comprehensive list of Portuguese wines. Both are reasonably priced. Although the Pousada has lifts access to most areas access to the Pousada itself and pool area could be difficult for those who are disabled as there arte steps and staircases that need to be negotiated. More ramps need to be provided - where possible. We noticed one or two guests struggling with is aspect of access and mobility. Otherwise our overall experience was excellent and we definitely recommend this Pousada to others.

Fabulous hotel
Amazing experience. No crowds. Peaceful, serene, bucolic environment. Amazing history. Beautiful grounds and pool. Recommend the spa massages with sweet Soraia. Staff incredibly nice. Thanks Joao e Joaquim for your friendliness and professionalism. The breakfast spread is amazing and the local food so so good. Overall a very unique type of hotel and I can't wait to go back .

My home is a castle... for the night
We stayed in the older, castle end of the pousada. This was a great stop coming from the mid-northern part of Portugal on our way down to Evora. Dinner was excellent.

Great hotel for a peaceful break
Excellent hotel facilities within historical setting. The bar area setting is fantastic as is the restaurant. Staff are superb and service to match! Restaurant is quality dining so not for all tastes / ages. Swimming pool area is well maintained. Superb location and hotel if you want a get away from it all break due to its relative isolation.

great pousada
wonderful!! location a bit remote but great for us. the building was beautiful, we stayed in a room with original stone walls, gorgeous. the food was great, the staff was exceptional, spoke english well, and helped us to set up a wine tasting at our next destination. would highly recommend.

Perfect for relaxing
We stayed for two nights in the tower room 501. It couldn't have been better. If you are looking for a break after a few long days of sightseeing, this is the place. Food very good. Service excellent. Hugh pool. Close drive to many other sights.

If you are looking for something exclusive!
A fantastic combination of historic location with modern design. Excellent restaurant with very friendly staff. The exclusivity of this hotel justifies the price.

Le monastère est joli mais l’hôtel n’est pas accueillant. Tout semble compliqué dès que l’on demande quelque chose: réservation obligatoire pour dîner, peu de staff, si vous arrivez charger avec vos bagages du parking, attendez vous à un parcours du combattant. La climatisation ne fonctionne pas dans la chambre. Les chambres font datées. Une prise électrique dans toute la chambre pour charger un portable.
