First trip to Carlisle. The hotel is situated in a very convenient location close to the station and the town centre. The interior is very tired and in desperate need of a complete refurb, the main stair carpets are well worn and tatty, this makes it feel quite grubby. I think it probably was a really lovely regal hotel 20-30yrs ago. The room we had (112) was probably the biggest room I’ve ever stayed although it was an adjoining room, everything was completely lost in the room due to the size of it. The floors were extremely creaky. It fronted out onto the main road that passes the hotel so you could hear traffic during the day. Single glazed windows, and secondary glazing that isn’t really effective. The bathroom was small in comparison to the room and again was very tired, the toilet bowl was dirty, the bathroom bin had not been emptied and the shower was in poor repair. The cold bath tap handle came off so made it difficult to use the tap for the shower. The bathroom door was really squeaky, we ended up having to ask the reception for some wd40 to fix it, they didn’t offer to find and look at it.
Probably the worse thing that is not mentioned on the details, is that the street gets closed and turns into a noisy club/pub strip at a weekend that goes on until 4am, so our room was in prime location for lots of drunken noise, for most of the night, this included fighting outside our room. About 5:30am the pavement and road sweepers go past clearing up. Very poor service.
