Translating to “Throat of the Sun” in Yucatec Maya, Calkiní is a municipality in the Mexican state of Campeche that abounds with outdoor adventures and sun-drenched settlements. Preserved wetlands near the Gulf of Mexico shelter colonies of pink flamingos and mangrove-studded waters. Visit Calkiní to explore colonial treasures and intriguing museums to learn about Calkiní’s rich history. A good place to begin your exploration of Calkiní is in the municipal seat of the same name. Calkiní is a city that reveals a captivating tapestry of history to those who take the time to explore. Check out the imposing stone façade of the church San Luis Obispo, which dates back to 1548\. The park fronting the church is a relaxing spot to sit and enjoy the views of the streetscape. Venture to the municipality’s smaller towns and settlements to find more heritage landmarks.
