#### Between the vineyards of this world-famous wine-growing region are ancient towns, medieval estates and a large collection of Romanesque churches.

Burgundy is so famous for its red wine that it has a dark red colour named after it. Visit the hills and valleys of this fertile region in east France covered in centuries-old vineyards and wineries. A bottle of red wine from Burgundy can last up to 20 or 30 years, but your memories of the lush countryside, medieval villages and ancient churches and châteaus will last far longer.

Head just south of the region’s capital of Dijon to find the region where most famous Burgundy wines are grown. Burgundy has a long wine-growing history, beginning with monks producing wine for the church. The heavy limestone content of Burgundy’s soil gives wines grown here a distinctive twist that you may notice upon tasting a few different glasses. To enhance your palate, sign up for a wine class.

The town of Beaune is considered the unofficial capital of Burgundy’s wine country. Visit the Burgundy Wine Museum to see old artifacts from the region’s wine-growing history, including antique wine presses. While in town, tour Les Hospices de Beaune, a beautiful medieval hospital that serves as the town’s main landmark. The bright mosaic pattern on the roof sparkles in the sunlight.

West of Dijon, find the Abbey of Vézelay, a massive Romanesque cathedral designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearby is an equally impressive although secular structure, the Chateau de Bazoches. Tour this 12th-century castle between the months of March and November.

While much of Burgundy consists of flat plains or gently rolling hills, there is also a mountainous area at the centre of the region called the Morvan. Walk the trails around the forested peaks and visit the Resistance Museum, which showcases the unique role the Morvan played in the Resistance movement against the German occupation during World War II.

Burgundy is less than a 2-hour drive from Paris. Visit during the fall, when summer crowds have thinned and the vineyards turn yellow and orange.

![Autun (Saône-et-Loire) Ancien évêché (XVe siècle). Le palais épiscopal a été inclus dans un castrum datant probablement du IXe siècle, peut-être antérieur. Entre 1189 et 1223, l'évêque Gauthier, également grand seigneur féodal (étant suzerain de nombreux barons et même du duc de Bourgogne pour certains fiefs), fit fortifier la maison de l'évêque par la construction d'un donjon carré dit "Tour Saint-Léger". Les contreforts d'angles on été rajoutés au milieu du XVIIe siècle. Les créneaux sont actuellement couverts d'un toit à quatre pentes. On doit à Saint-Léger, évêque d'Autun et martyr du VIIe siècle, la restauration des remparts gallo-romains. Evêque politique, Léger (Leodegard) soutiendra Childéric contre Theodoric dans la succession du jeune roi Clotaire III mort à 20 ans en 673. De son côté, Theodoric est soutenu par Ebroïn maire du palais de Neustrie. Childeric l'emporte et Leodegard devient conseiller du nouveau roi; mais les critiques de Leodegard sur le mariage du roi avec une parente proche entraînent la disgrâce de l'évêque. En 675, Childéric est assassiné et Theodoric prend le pouvoir. Leodegard se rallie au nouveau roi, mais il se heurte à Ebroïn qui maintenant soutenait un autre prétendant, Clovis. Le conflit est tel qu'Ebroïn assiège Leodegard à Autun, en 676. Leodegard devra se rendre, ses forces étant inférieures. Ebroïn fera arracher les yeux, puis les lèvres et la langue de son ennemi. Leodegard survivra miraculeusement, réfugié dans la forêt de Couhard, près d'Autun. Recueilli dans une abbaye de femmes en Normandie, il y retrouvera la parole. Ebroïn s'étant de nouveau rallié à Théodoric est redevenu maire du palais (par comparaison avec l'époque actuelle, une sorte de premier ministre). Constatant que Leodegarde est redevenu dangereux, Ebroïn le fait assassiner dans la forêt de Lucheux (Somme) le 2 octobre 678. Les assassins feront disparaître le cadavre après décapitation. Le corps aurait été enterré en forêt sur le territoire de la commune de Lucheux. Une chapelle marque cette sépulture présumée, endroit qui verra des miracles. Un concile d'évêques proclamera la sainteté de Leodegard lors de la fête de Pâques 681.
