Holidays to Burg

On a trip to Burg you'll see the well-preserved old town with its many historical buildings and towers and you can also visit the wooded countryside round about.

The town of Burg is near Magdeburg and is made up of the Blumenthal, Gütter and Madel districts. A holiday in Burg is fantastic because you can really immerse yourself in history in the town centre. Burg is the perfect place for mini-breaks and weekend trips: it's also known at the "City of Towers" because the old town contains a large number of towering historical buildings which you can visit. These include the Berlin Gate Tower, the Cow Gate or Freedom Tower, the Witches Tower and the Water Tower.

The Berlin Gate Tower was built in the 14th century and was originally a defensive watchtower. These days it is used for events such as weddings and book readings. The Cow Gate, also known as the Freedom Tower, was first mentioned in the 16th century. The tower, which is believed to have served as a residence for courtiers, was given the name Cow Gate because the inhabitants of the town used to drive their cattle through the gate into the meadow. Today you can see exhibitions in the tower.

The Witches Tower was built in the 11th century. It also had the function of a defensive watchtower and still has visible remnants of the town wall. The tower was given this name because in the 17th century it served as a women's prison and held women who were accused and convicted of being witches. The Water Tower was built in 1902 in red brick. It has a capacity of 400m³. However, it is no longer used for storing water: it now houses exhibitions on the industrial history, horticulture and agriculture of the town.

Make sure you visit some of the nearby places during your holiday in Burg. One of the most popular day trip destinations on the outskirts of the town of Burg is the Bürgerholz. This is a 580-hectare nature reserve where visitors can unwind in lovely natural surroundings. You can also really relax at the Niegripper See Lake which is less than a mile west of the town. There is a swimming area on the north side where you can have a dip on a hot day in the refreshing cool water. You can also explore the surroundings by bike on the well-planned network of cycle paths. A short trip to Burg near Magdeburg is a treat for anyone interested in history and a hot tip for your next holiday.
