Buenavista is one of a string of resort towns that are spread along the East Cape region of Baja California Sur. It’s a popular location for North American retirees, who come to enjoy the state’s laid-back charm, stunning natural beauty and superb watersports opportunities. Buenavista, which means good view in English, is a great place to go swimming and fishing. 

The long, curving and rarely crowded beach is the town’s main attraction. Kick off your shoes and feel the soft sand pass between your toes; it’s possible to walk uninterrupted to the neighboring resort of Los Barriles. Plunge into water so clear that you can spot exotic fish species with the naked eye. There aren’t many amenities on the beach so it is a good idea to bring your own food and drink. 

At the southern edge of the beach is an area called Spa Buena Vista. Here you’ll find the largest concentration of hotels, guesthouses and self-catering accommodation. Tour operators line the main road and organise numerous beach-based activities, including horseback riding and sea kayaking. Join a deep-sea fishing charter and fish for dorado, marlin and tuna. 

There are plenty of places to visit within a short drive of the town. One hour to the south is Cabo Pulmo, a national park and marine reserve regarded among the best places to snorkel in Mexico. Hike amid canyons and to lookouts and waterfalls in the Sierra de la Laguna, the tallest mountain range in the state. Travel between a collection of hot springs set in the countryside around Santiago. 

Buenavista is less than a 2-hour drive from La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur. Flights arrive at La Paz International Airport from major national cities such as Guadalajara, Mexico City and Tijuana. A little further away is San José del Cabo, which receives flights from Canada and the USA. Rent a car at either of the airports and start your East Cape adventure.
