No phone service/read amenities carefully
First the positive. It has a lovely back yard, charming neighborhood and friendly neighbors. There have been some updates in the bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom. There’s was an effort to welcome guests with guidebooks, information booklet, books and movies. Ok, now the problems. First, there is only a bath tub with separate hot water and cold water spigots. The profile has bath and doesn’t mention shower so I missed this. My mistake. This didn’t work for our family. When my husband went to add more hot water to the tub he burnt his foot. The hot water comes out at practically boiling when it’s available. That’s the other thing, when the hot water runs out it takes an hour to get more. Plan accordingly. We were doing laundry, washing dishes and trying to bath 4 people and it ran out. The other big issue is phone service. We were notified a week before arriving that there was no cell service. However, there was a landline. No. It didn’t work. It just was static. I was to call with problems but had no phone service. My son was having breathing problems and I couldn’t contact anyone. I emailed. No response. I did get cell service if I climbed on top of the hill - that would have been nice to know. Finally, it said it had a barbeque- it didn’t. We planned barbeque meals the whole time so we were left trying to redo everything. The actual final issue was the amount of stuff that is standard at other vrbos we’ve stayed at and just was not there or we were required to do when we left- Ie no hand soap at the kitchen sink, no no wash cloths, no extra towels. When we left we were supposed to wash, dry, and put away all dishes, wipe down refrigerator, and strip beds. I would not stay here if you have asthma either. We came very close to having to take my son to the A&E.

I’m delighted that you found some elements of the cottage enjoyable. Our photographs and description on VRBO show a bathtub, no shower. The cottage is over 230 years old and it's not possible to install a shower. Thanks for letting us know the phone didn’t work. We reported the fault as soon as we could. There is a line fault between the cottage and the exchange and the provider is working to fix it. However, the internet is unaffected and it is possible to make mobile phone calls with wifi. In our experience, it is rare to have a phone provided in a rental cottage and rarer still, one that does not charge for calls. I’m truly sorry that your son has suffered breathing problems at our cottage. I am asthmatic with allergies to fur, feathers and a number of other allergens and truly sympathise with anyone that suffers in a similar way. We do not allow guests to bring pets and are strict on this for that reason. We are meticulous with the cleaning of the property and use a hospital grade vacuum cleaner. I note from your email that you had mistaken our fireguard for a dog cage. It really is a fireguard, used in winter with the log burner. I’ve checked the VRBO listing and you are correct. It does list a barbecue. I have corrected this and apologise unreservedly. We do provide a bath towel for each guest, a hand towel and soap in the bathroom, tea towels, washing up liquid and dish cloth in the kitchen. We also provide cleaning materials and cloths. Can I remind you that the property is a self-catering rental cottage and not a hotel. It is customary to leave rental cottages in a clean and tidy condition. We clean the cottage thoroughly but do not expect to wash and replace dirty dishes, scrub food spillages that have been left on the floor or deal with an unduly filthy bathroom. We ask guests to strip the beds in line with letting agency guidance. It’s disappointing if a guest does not love the cottage although nearly all of our guests do love it and find its quirkiness charming. Perhaps a hotel might be more appropriate to your needs?

Nice cozy cottage in quiet village on a very narrow street. Handy for all the local sights, 5 minutes from Bridport. Huge secluded nicely kept garden to rear, sunny patio seating area. A few sttep stept up to the front door. Really enjoyed our stay.

Gorgeous Dorset cottage!
The cottage is lovely and very comfy. It was very cosy to drive back to after a day out hiking or fossil hunting down by the beach. We thoroughly enjoyed the picnic table on the terrace out back, surrounded with flowers and birds and the wood burner provided the extra warmth we needed in the evening. The house isn't huge but large enough for a family of four. We didn't get to meet our hosts but we exchanged numerous emails and Cate was very responsive. After we left a message saying the water pressure up in the bathroom was on the low side, she told us they had plans to fix it as soon as we'd leave and offered us to stay an extra night at no cost. It was our kids' first time in the English countryside and we couldn't have chosen a better place to introduce them to the joys and beauty of beautiful Dorset. Oh and the parking space is small but it's perfectly manageable!

Coastal walking holiday
This was a perfect location for walking the East Devon/Dorset section of the SW Coast path. The cottage was warm, comfortable and well equipped. It has a lovely garden and we enjoyed feeding the hedgehog and watching the blackbirds steal the grapes. Parking at the bottom of the lane was easy and we always found space for two cars. The owners were really helpful and very prompt at responding to questions.

Thanks for your lovely review - very pleased you enjoyed your time at Gulliver’s Cottage! Thanks too for leaving the cottage so beautifully tidy and for feeding our hedgehog and her babies…. We caught sight of one of the babies and it was no more than 2 inches long! Hope to see you again. Cate and Jonathan

Nice cosy cottage (parking a bit tight though)
Cottage is nicely decorated with lovely large garden. Parking ok if you're adept at reverse parking in a tight space - otherwise just park down the road. Quiet village, lovely on a sunny summer evening to sit outside the church and enjoy the countryside.

Hi Lesley - thanks for your lovely review. Very pleased you liked Gulliver's Cottage. The church is beautiful. Did you know that Thomas Hardy supervised repairs there as a young architect? We've been lucky enough to spot glow-worms there too! Hope you'll think about us next time you want to visit Dorset. Jonathan and Cate

Cosy, Charming, Convenient
This is a charming terraced cottage in a village side-street. The location is idyllic, being convenient for the shopping in Bridport and the many other activities in this beautiful part of the world. The house is neatly and quietly tucked away, the interior being small but cosy and comfortable. It's well equipped and one has everything one could reasonably need for a pleasant stay. There is also a lovely, surprisingly spacious and well kept garden to the rear. There is a useful parking place to the front of the house, which is tight but perfectly adequate. Owners were charming and helpful. My adult son and I enjoyed a delightful week in the property and would certainly like to return. Highly recommended.

Hi Matthew Thanks for your review - delighted that you enjoyed your stay and your time in Dorset. You would be very welcome to return. The cottage is fabulous in winter, with a log fire waiting for you after a walk on the beach at Burton Bradstock. We love the garden too - the grapes are just ripening on the vine and today, we found a nursing hedgehog with three noisy babies! Best wishes Jonathan and Cate

We were not alone!
Firstly, we loved the cottage and also the village, but other aspects were frustrating to say the least! We received an enthusiastic call once we had booked and a promise of cycle routes and ideas from an apparently avid cyclist. On arrival it was frustrating to be told we couldn't leave our bikes in the back garden a little earlier than the 5pm arrival time to go for a walk as we were unhappy leaving them on the car. Thought he might understand being a cyclist himself and unsurprisingly the maps and routes never materialised! The car parking space is hilarious, maybe only for me as I am not the driver in our party, but do not believe him about getting a 4 by 4 in there!!! The worst thing actually was the constant calling, emailing etc from the owner. We had a text and phone calls and an email to tell us to put the bins out!? When at the end of the holiday we were told there was no rush to leave in the morning, as soon as the phone started ringing we got the hell out of there!! Great place if you want the owner there on holiday with you.

Emma, I am left speechless by this review which is both unfair, unreasonable and untruthful. Firstly, every second counts during a changeover - we not only clean but sanitise as well - this is what we commit to do for VRBO and other lettings agents. Its hard work and it takes twice as long as a normal changeover. However, on this occasion, we had help from our two daughters and they made it possible for you to get in earlier than expected. I told you that we would try our best and let you know if you could go in early. We did text you to tell you but you never responded. You wouldn't answer your phone either. By the way, we also texted to say that you could stay in the cottage and/or keep your bikes in the cottage until 5.00pm on your departure day too, instead of leaving at 9.00am. Funny how you didn't mention that... Don't recall ever offering you bike routes but would've been happy to do so. I cycled my £5,000 carbon fibre BMC up and down Eggardon Hill today and another 55 miles too. On the car parking space, we parked our 2 4x4s a Mitsubishi Outlander and a Honda CRV and two mere 2x4s, a Ford Kuga and our current vehicle, a Leaf in that space. I'm not in the habit of lying about such banal things. I do recall that I had to send you our welcome note twice as you had locked yourself out your account. Think back and you will recall that their is an option to park in the village too - a two minute walk to the front door. We asked you to put the recycling boxes out (two boxes that needed to be moved 25 yards and placed on the doorstep). I'm sorry that your were disappointed. Cottages are not hotels, all owners I know ask their visitors to help with this. Perhaps, if you want the kind of things you mentioned, you might consider a hotel next time? But of course, you would only have had a room, no large private garden and it would have cost much more. We always try to do as much as we are able to make our visitors stays successful. There was a mix-up on the bedding but we were there within 45 minutes to solve the issue. In our review of you, we overlooked the fact that you hadn't emptied bins as requested by VRBO's Covid precautions, the bath was left dirty, crockery had been replaced with only a cursory rinse and paintwork on the stairway was marked with a black substance. We said we'd have you back. Don't think we will.

Cosy terraced cottage which feels homely and well euipped. Great terraced garden, lots of bird songs, sunny spots to enjoy outside. Due to size of bathroom there is no proper shower, bath good size. Comfortable bed. Very peacefull little village, beautiful surroundings.
