In 1853, a group of young women established the Brewster Ladies’ Library, and ever since it has been keeping the residents of Brewster in books and other reading materials.
In the mid-1850s, two young Brewster women came up with the idea of a subscription library. Soon joined by ten of their friends, they set up a bookshelf library in the home of one of the young women.
When the library rapidly outgrew its tiny space, Brewster town raised funds to build across the street a separate building, which was erected in 1868. At first, men had to pay more to take out books, but that didn’t last very long.
Over the next century, Brewster Ladies’ Library kept growing, so it was extended several times. Then, as now, the library relied on fundraising to buy more books and keep the library going. From small beginnings – 200 books on a few shelves – the library now has more than 50,000 volumes.
Brewster is a small town inland from Cape Cod Bay. There are a couple of luxury bed and breakfast hotels steeped in history in Brewster, or you could choose a 19th-century beachfront resort hotel nearer the coast. If you want a wider choice of hotels near Brewster, look in the Yarmouth villages or at the motels on Highway 6A.
After a good breakfast at your hotel, learn about the history of the town at the Brewster Historical Society Museum, which has colonial artefacts and treasures picked up by sea captains. If you want a pleasant stroll after your visit and before you head back to your hotel, follow the path that leads to a sandy beach from behind the museum.
Check out the family-friendly exhibits at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, which helps you understand Provincetown’s flora and fauna. You can see the live versions afterwards on a walk along the boardwalk trail that crosses a salt marsh and ends up at a tranquil beach.
