In 1853, a group of young women established the Brewster Ladies’ Library, and ever since it has been keeping the residents of Brewster in books and other reading materials.
The Story of the Brewster Ladies’ Library
In the mid-1850s, two young Brewster women came up with the idea of a subscription library. Soon joined by ten of their friends, they set up a bookshelf library in the home of one of the young women.
When the library rapidly outgrew its tiny space, Brewster town raised funds to build across the street a separate building, which was erected in 1868. At first, men had to pay more to take out books, but that didn’t last very long.
Over the next century, Brewster Ladies’ Library kept growing, so it was extended several times. Then, as now, the library relied on fundraising to buy more books and keep the library going. From small beginnings – 200 books on a few shelves – the library now has more than 50,000 volumes.
