A house full of character and history since it once was the village hall and school, and where the famous french writer Pierre Loti spent his vacations several times as a child. You will enjoy its 1700 ft2, its 540 ft2 living room with 18th century wood panelling, its two 215 ft2 bedrooms with each a shower room and toilets, its stone "castle" staircase with its wrought iron railing, its large kitchen with open fireplace... If you like wood and stone, this house will delight you. And under these ancient appearances remain all the modern conveniences. Bedding renewed in 2022\. The house is sunny but remains cool even in the summer thanks to its 3ft thick stone walls (and there is a fan in each bedroom). There is no garden but at 300ft a large park on a pedestrian island will welcome you (featuring games for children, a "pétanque" court, a basketball court, a rugby court... you will find pétanque balls in the house if you want to try this typical french sport!). The house is close to all shops: bakery at 130 ft (for croissants every day!), market at 150 ft twice a week for fresh local products, restaurant at 300ft, supermarkets at 2 minutes and for the more sporty, petanque ground and canoe/bike rental at 1000ft... It is ideally located to visit the Dordogne valley. The renowned Padirac chasm is a 20 minutes drive, Rocamadour a 35 minutes drive, the "most beautiful villages of France" (official award, not my personal opinion!) Loubressac, Autoire and Carennac are all less than 6 miles away, Saint-Céré and its festival at 10 minutes... Not to mention the "Causses du Quercy natural park", the countless castles, the hikes, the caves, the aquatic and animal parks very much enjoyed by the children... Basically, everything is less than 30 minutes away by car, a few days won’t be enough to explore everything! In the house, you will find a guidebook that I wrote in French and English to share my good addresses for visits, places to swim, and of course... good restaurants and local specialties to try! The house can accommodate up to five people but please note that there are only two bedrooms (see photos): \- one room with a double queen size bed (160 cm wide) and a single bed \- one room with a double queen size bed (160 cm wide) Bed linen, towels, wifi and cleaning fees included. Please be aware that this house is located in the heart of the village, which means that you will be able to hear the village live. There is very little traffic and Bretenoux is generally speaking very quiet but from the living room you can sometimes hear the noises of the market, the bar or the restaurants on the square. The noise is not excessive and the bedrooms are completely silent but don’t expect the absolute silence of a house deep in the countryside like you can find so many in the Lot region! ## Property amenities ### Internet - Available in the house: Free WiFi ### Parking and transport - Parking on site ### Kitchen - Coffee/tea maker - Cookware, dishware, and utensils - Dishwasher - Electric kettle - Hob - Microwave - Oven - Paper towels - Refrigerator - Spices - Toaster ### Dining - Dining table ### Bedrooms - 2 bedrooms - Bedsheets provided - Sofa bed ### Bathroom - Hair dryer - Shower - Toilet paper - Towels provided ### Living spaces - Dining table - Fireplace - Living room - Separate dining area ### Entertainment - Books - DVD player - Games - Smart TV - Video library ### Laundry - Laundry facilities - Washing machine ### Work spaces - Office ### Comfort - Heating ### Pets - No pets allowed ### Suitability/Accessibility - Smoke-free property ### Services and conveniences - Iron/ironing board - Limited housekeeping ### Location highlights - In a village - Near a hospital ### Things to do - Gym - Kayak - Casino nearby - Cycling nearby - Ecotours nearby - Golfing nearby - Hiking/biking trails nearby - Horseback riding nearby - Winery tours nearby ### Safety features - Carbon monoxide detector (host has indicated there is a carbon monoxide detector on the property) - Smoke detector (host has indicated there is a smoke detector on the property) - First aid kit - Fire extinguisher ### General - Unit size: 1,700 square feet ## Similar properties ![Exterior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/108000000/107910000/107906500/107906493/61ec4c60.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Guest house Rouffiac - Breakfast included - Pet-friendly - Free Wi-Fi - Air-conditioning 10 Exceptional 1 review £68 includes taxes & fees 27 Feb - 28 Feb [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-02-27&endDate=2026-02-28&selected=107906493&PinnedHotelID=107906493&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Exterior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/28000000/27130000/27126300/27126241/26b2cb80.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Quiet stone house Carennac - Kitchen - Washing machine - Outdoor space - Parking available 9.6 Exceptional 49 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-03-12&endDate=2026-03-13&selected=27126241&PinnedHotelID=27126241&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Outdoor dining](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/104000000/103970000/103961300/103961215/c94d3d13.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Cottage du Lac by Interhome Camps-Saint-Mathurin-Léobazel - Kitchen - Washing machine - Pet-friendly - Parking available [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-03-12&endDate=2026-03-13&selected=103961215&PinnedHotelID=103961215&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Property grounds](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/112000000/111860000/111859500/111859427/b3c912fa.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Le Paradis, stunning 18th-century vineyard master's house Cornac - Pool - Kitchen - Washing machine - Dryer [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-03-12&endDate=2026-03-13&selected=111859427&PinnedHotelID=111859427&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) [Compare similar properties](/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-03-12&endDate=2026-03-13&selected=32627402&PinnedHotelID=32627402&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2&comparePropertyIds=32627402,107906493,27126241,103961215,111859427) ## Policies ### Check-in Check-in time starts at 4:00 PM Contactless check-in and check-out are available ### Check-out Check-out before 11:00 AM ### Special check-in instructions You will receive an email from the host with check-in and check-out instructions Information provided by the property may be translated using automated translation tools ### Pets Pets not allowed ### Children and extra beds Children are welcome ### Events No events allowed ### Smoking Smoking is not permitted ## Important information ### You need to know This property is managed by a private host (a party not acting within their trade, business or profession). The kitchen contained every tool and appliance necessary for meal preparation, and Stephane has brilliantly affixed laminated step-by-step operating instructions to the cooker, washer, dryer, etc.-- such a thoughtful thing to do! He was an excellent host; hospitable, informational, and readily available. The single negative aspect of our stay occurred toward the end and was neither his fault nor a problem with the house, but one of timing. The disruption caused by the setting-up of the rides, booths, etc. for the annual village fête made parking and getting in and out of little Bretenoux complicated and annoying. By all means, enjoy staying at this interesting 15th century house, but make sure the village calendar is free of events! Merci. ##### Verified traveller Stayed 7 nights in Aug 2020 ---
