See the sheltered waters of Narragansett Bay meet the surging Atlantic Ocean from this park on the southern tip of Aquidneck Island.

Brenton Point State Park presents one of Rhode Island’s best views across the entrance of Narragansett Bay and over the centuries its spectacular vantage point has been used as a farmstead, coastal defence and manor estate. Explore picturesque hiking paths that weave across the grassy foreshore and check out some of the historic structures that remain here. Go fishing on the rocky shoreline or fly a kite on the cool breeze that sweeps in from the Atlantic Ocean.

Brenton Point was used as a battery and coastal defence during the Revolutionary War. In the 19th century, a grand manor was built on the site but was largely destroyed by fire. Today, you can explore the mansion’s servants’ quarters, which house the park’s visitor centre and ranger’s office. Go to the visitor centre to obtain maps and discover what events are occurring in the park during your stay.

Take a stroll around the park’s network of hiking trails and enjoy the vast coastal vista. Pack a picnic and have lunch on the rocky shoreline or make use of the park benches situated on the foreshore. The rocky outcrop along the point is a popular fishing spot, so bring your reel to try your luck in the Atlantic waters. You might spy yachts sailing around the bay, as well as ferries coming and going between the islands.

Walk among the stone bollards that are part of the Portuguese Discovery Monument. Interpretive panels provide context and meaning to the monument.

Visit Brenton Point State Park in July to experience the family-friendly Newport Kite Festival. This exciting annual event draws kite-flying enthusiasts from interstate to participate in the colourful display of kites dancing on the brisk Brenton Point winds.

The park is located on Aquidneck Island’s southwestern tip. It is approximately 15-minutes’ drive from downtown Newport. You can also take the scenic route along the coastal Ocean Avenue, which follows the island’s southern edge from Gooseberry Beach.

Brenton Point State Park is free to enter and open between sunrise and sunset, with special access available to people going fishing after dusk. Parking is available on site and restrooms are open between May and October.
