A weekend in Borlange

The picturesque town of Borlange in the central Swedish county of Dalarna has gone from an industrial town to a modern centre for music, shopping and education in recent years.

Borlange as it looks today is not an ancient city. During the latter half of the 19th century this village developed into a town as the railroad came and the two large industries Kvarnsvedens Paper Mill and Domnarvets Iron Works were established. Borlange has a long industrial past, but in recent years it has refocussed its energy on new activities like education, service, trade and tourism. A sign of the town's view to the future is the science centre Framtidsmuseet, or the Future Museum. Borlange also has a particularly active music and festival scene, and a few famous Swedish bands hail from here.

Borlange is a great weekend destination because of its central location and great connections to nearby landmarks. Try out the slopes in Romme Alpin or skate on lake Runn in winter. Adventure mine Tuna Hastberg and plenty of hiking trails are popular summer attractions for active tourists.

Another beautiful destination for an outing is the beautiful village of Torsang. It is scenically situated amongst several waterways and has a medieval church, a motor museum and a nice old community centre. Another landmark is the Ornasloft which is famous as the hiding place of king Gustav Vasa when he was on the run from the Danes in the 16th century. A holiday in Borlange gives you the chance to discover the wonderful Swedish county of Dalarna, with its characteristic red houses surrounded by green nature.

Borlange has a rich music scene with many stages and pubs that offer live music. Maximteatern is the oldest theatre in this part of Sweden, and here you can see local theatre companies and students from the music school perform. The music school in Borlange has a strong presence in the town, and maybe this is why so many great artists have emerged from here. Mando Diao, Miss Li and Claes Yngstrom are a few of the most famous names.

It is easy to get to Borlange with the fast InterCity train from Stockholm, and the journey takes around 2,5 hours. From Gothenburg the train journey requires a change, and takes 4,5 hours. You can also arrive in Borlange by air to Dala Airport, which is situated a 15 minute drive from the town and has routes from both Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Whatever you are looking for on your holiday to Borlange you are sure to find something that is to your taste. Book a musical weekend in Borlange or spend your time discovering unique natural environments in Dalarna.
