Yungas Holiday Packages
Trek through incredibly varied landscapes of snowcapped mountains, cloud forest and thick jungle in this remote region between the Andes and the Amazon basin.
Yungas’ forest-covered mountains and fertile valleys are a stark contrast to nearby snow-white peaks and arid Altiplano. See diverse ecosystems and wildlife as you trek through grasslands and cloud forest. Relax in the remote resort towns of Coroico and Chulumani, set amid stunning scenery.
The old road to the Yungas from La PazOpens in a new window is often said to be the most dangerous in the world and though still open, it’s now mainly the domain of mountain bikers. Now a modern highway makes the journey smooth and safe, but reaching the remote resort of Coroico, a former gold-mining outpost, still feels like an adventure. Spend a few days here enjoying the warm climate and incredible views before setting out on a trek through the surrounding countryside.
Visit cloud forest and spot exotic bird species in the Parque Nacional Cotapata, which encompasses a range of different climates and ecosystems within a remarkably small area. High mountain slopes give way to grasslands and then striking cloud forest, before descending into dense forest below.
The popular Choro Trail is the best way to explore Cotapata. Follow the 40-mile (70-kilometre) pre-Hispanic path, mostly downhill, past Inca ruins and small villages before reaching the cloud forest. For a more challenging trek, tackle the more difficult Yunga Cruz Trail, which follows the spine of a giant ridge. Trekkers are rewarded with an unrivalled view of the dramatic landscape
Much easier to follow is the Takesi Trail, one of Bolivia’s most popular treks. Enjoy a spectacular array of scenery on the 24-mile (40-kilometre) hike, which crosses the Cordillera Real before plunging down into the steamy, forested valleys of the Yungas, stopping at campsites and small, friendly settlements along the way.
Most treks end close to the peaceful town of Chulumani, which is less touristy than Coroico but blessed with equally good views. Stay a while and enjoy the views before setting off on your next adventure.
The best way to reach Yungas is by bus or private transportation from La Paz. The roads can be narrow but the views are usually spectacular.
