Excellent. Cheap (stayed for Great North Run) and full of other runners and nice people. Had 2 showers in a 6-person dorm - clean and with shampoo/body wash - good temperature, clean and considerate roommates. Felt like a proper, well established company doing everything right.
Very good value breakfast (£7), great seating options and free coffee.
Literally no idea how they could do anything better.
All hostels should use this as an example of how it can be done.

Great location, affordable apartment for a large group. Metro link directly outside the door to connect you to Newcastle. Apartment in great condition and would recommend this place.
Check in was difficult as you need to communicate with host over phone to retrieve the code to access the key but apart from that it was great.
Security deposit usually scares me from booking with places as i have been scammed before but rest assured there is no scamming here, with the host very kind when spoke on the phone.

"It's an old hotel, but its clean, tidy and the staff are great. Rooms vary, some are bigger than others. Location couldn't be any better for the centre of Carlisle. "I stayed for a long weekend and the cleanliness and staff were exceptional. However, the Wi-Fi didn’t reach my room, which was 130, a single room as I was travelling alone. The other somewhat disappointing aspect was the lack of water pressure in the shower."
