Discover the hidden charm of this walled town in the Umbria region with medieval churches and visible remnants of ancient Roman times.

Rich in medieval architecture and ancient Roman ruins, visiting the sleepy Umbrian town of Bevagna is like stepping back in time. Situated in the lush Vale of Spoleto, Bevagna is relatively flat compared to the surrounding hilltop towns of Umbria, so getting around on foot is easy.

The focal point of the central Piazza Silvestri is its fountain, but the beautifully preserved Basilica of St. Sylvester is much older. Admire its 12th-century interior and frescoes of the Umbrian school.

Next door, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is another notable church. While in the square, visit the 13th-century Gothic Palazzo dei Consoli (Palace of the Consuls), home to the Teatro Torti since 1886.

The 17th-century Palazzo Lepri, in Corso Matteotti, is now home to the Bevagna Town Hall. Your entrance ticket to its Museo Civico includes a visit to a nearby modern building in the Via di Porta Guelfa where you can admire remnants of a mosaic floor with black-and-white depictions of sea creatures that once adorned the Roman Thermae.

Spot the bell tower of the 13th-century Church of Saint Francis near the Foligno Gate, built on the ruins of a 1st-century Roman Theatre. Stroll to Piazza Garibaldi where the partly ruined church named the Madonna of the Snow hides the foundations of an ancient Roman temple.

Don’t miss the Tenuta Castelbuona winery outside the city walls. Marvel at its copper dome building, nicknamed “Il Carapace” because it resembles a giant tortoise shell. Make reservations for a guided tour in English or simply book a tasting session with excellent views of the vineyards bursting with Sagrantino grapes.

Let your visit coincide with the “Il Mercato delle Gaite” in June. This medieval festival showcases the olives, wine, honey, artisan talents, crafts and cuisine of the region.

To get to Bevagna, fly to Umbria International Airport, just north of Assisi, and rent a car or take a bus to Foligno, about 20 miles (32 kilometres) south. Change buses there, Bevagna is 7 miles (10 kilometres) drive west. Spello is the nearest train station.

Bevagna is one of the few Umbrian towns where you can still visit a “trattoria” where locals outnumber tourists. Enjoy the authentic atmosphere and timeless charm of this precious Umbrian town.
