The square took its name in 1931 to commemorate the martyrs executed there under Ottoman rule. During the Lebanese Civil War, it formed the demarcation line that divided the city in half. During the reconstruction of the Square following the Civil Ware (1975-1990) archaeologists uncovered the ruins of a Roman city with a large section of a main Roman street, with paving and columns. The street also contained the remains of Roman baths.
