The best area to stay in Bárcenas is within the historic village centre itself, particularly around the Plaza Mayor.

This charming village is quite compact, with its well-preserved stone houses and narrow, winding streets creating a picturesque setting. The Plaza Mayor is the heart of the village, where you'll find the main church and a few local eateries. It's a place where you can truly experience the traditional Cantabrian way of life.

Couples looking for a tranquil escape will find the village centre perfect. You can enjoy strolls through the cobblestone lanes, discover small craft shops, and savour local cuisine in a peaceful setting. It's an ideal spot for unwinding and enjoying the beauty of the Spanish countryside together.

For travellers who appreciate convenience and the ability to easily explore the surrounding Picos de Europa National Park, staying just on the outskirts of the village, perhaps along the main road (CA-183), offers good access.

The best time to visit Bárcenas is during late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October).

These periods offer pleasant weather, with comfortable temperatures that are ideal for exploring the natural beauty and historic sites of the region without the peak summer crowds. You'll find the countryside lush in spring and beautifully coloured in autumn, superb for walks and outdoor activities.

For those who enjoy hiking and outdoor pursuits, late spring is particularly good as the days are longer and the flora is in full bloom. The trails around the Picos de Europa National Park, which is easily accessible from Bárcenas, are at their most inviting.
