Lovely Victorian in quiet, scenic location Tue
The Painted Lady earned her name for the vivid blue exterior which stands out in a quiet NE neighborhood overlooking historic Astoria and the Columbia River. The second story apartment has high ceilings, multiple tall windows and a Victorian ambiance. The kitchen and is a wonderful place to gather around the dining table for good food, conversation and views of the marine traffic below. Except for the dim bedside reading lights, it was perfect. Come prepared with food and drink because the closest grocery stores and restaurants are a minimum of a 10-minute walk away.

A Peaceful Weekend Away
House was extremely clean and well-organized. Everything we needed was on hand and easy to find. Communication was great and the check-in and check-out processes were very simple. The house was in a quiet location but just a few blocks off the main drag, easily accessible to restaurants and shops. And the best part was the sea lion lullabies! Those suckers are LOUD. Would definitely stay there again!

Lovely view, but needs some updates.
Pros: The historic painted lady is adorable, and has a lovely river view and lots of sea lion sounds. Communication and self check-in were easy to follow. We were able to bring our small dog, and there were thoughtful touches for her, like doggy towels and poo bags, as well as food and water bowls. The cleanliness was very good in the more important areas: bathrooms, kitchen, bedding, towels. The neighborhood was quiet. Cons: There are a lot of tchockies and fabrics throughout that are quite outdated and dusty, and there is a fairly heavy chemical cleanser/scent, so we had to keep the windows open to avoid headaches. We were also so disappointed that the clawfoot tub was not available for use, as this was a selling point for us. The main drawback was the beds; the mattresses are way too firm and broken down. I resorted to sleeping curled up on the couch 2 nights, just to avoid a trip to the chiropractor. For me, the cons outweighed the pros, so I will stay elsewhere on my next visit to Astoria.

Allyson, the right vacation home is everything, and we're disappointed if this wasn't the one for you. We followed up with the homeowner after reading your feedback, and they wanted to share the following: -"Cleanliness is very important to us, but we apologize if the cleaning products caused discomfort during your stay. We'll be sure to take steps to prevent that situation in the future. -While we try to accommodate all guests' comfort, mattress taste is subjective, and we have never received any complaints about this in the past. We're sorry if the mattresses didn't meet your preferences. We do have plans to replace them in the very near future. -We appreciate your feedback so we can continue to improve and provide better experiences for our guests."

Great stay!
As a group of six adults, we really enjoyed the location, the views, the ease to get to various locations nearby on foot... The house was a little tight with six adults, as two had to stay on the fold out couch in the common area, and we did not really have a spot to enjoy the outdoors since the yard is for the long-term tenant. That would be my only wish/suggestion is to have outdoor space to be able to hang out and spread out. Overall the stay was great! There's more than enough space for four adults! Plenty of bathrooms!

Painted Lady Astoria
Fantastic location, beautiful views. Lots of stairs. We came during an unusual snow storm and both the walkway and steps to the porch were treacherously icy. No shovel or ice melt available. We went and looked to purchase ourselves and none to be found! Fortunately, it all melted off by the last full day we were there. We had an AWD drive car, which was quite helpful and definitely recommended in the snow on the hills in the neighborhood. The snow was beautiful, but made everything a bit harder, especially without access to a shovel/ice melt. House was as expected, comfortable enough for us! We loved the view! It was quite chilly in the house when we arrived, but it warmed up quickly and was nice and cozy! Excellent shower pressure! House was very clean. Some of the outlets didn't appear to work. They were very accommodating to us when we asked to allow my 65+ yr old parents to be able to visit us during the day (since covid numbers were high again), exceeding our allowed guest count. We really appreciated that last minute accommodation! Overall, great visit, thank you!

Quaint but small
The Painted Lady is a quaint and quiet place to stay in Astoria. The owners are very helpful and accommodating. We we had last minute guest shifts that were easily and pleasantly addressed. Ultimately we were only 3 staying in the unit and felt that any more would have been overcrowded. The steps up to the unit are very steep and we couldn't find an outside light for illumination. Altho there are 3 beds, the third is a sofa bed, in the living room, and the one sleeping there either sets the bedtime for the group or is at the mercy of any night owls! If you are in Astoria for its charm and history, this could be a great little place to stay; for us it was perfectly adequate.

Unsafe home
The website photos were accurate and showed an older, unique, two-bedroom home. We enjoyed the view and the beds were comfortable. The home, however, was not safe. The front stairs were extremely dangerous, with the top step loose and attached with tar paper (see photo), loose steps which have tar paper and other debris piled on (photo) and a hand rail for the second story landing about 18" high. Inside there are two walls with exposed insulation and studs and a bathroom under construction (see photo) and another with black mold in the shower. Renting a home in such disrepair for over $450 a night was a disappointment, to say the least.

Hi Kelleen, we're glad that you enjoyed certain aspects of this home but sorry that your stay fell short in other areas. We were not made aware of any concerns during your stay, nor did we receive any photos with evidence of these issues. After following up with the homeowner, they would like to share this feedback: - The step is not attached with tar paper, but there is a non-slip strip attached to the top of the stairs. We have asked our housekeeper to ensure that no steps are loose. - There was no debris anywhere, and the steps are always swept as part of the cleaning process. - There are no handrails in the house that are only 18" high. - As we inform guests before arrival, we started some improvements before Covid that we have not been able to have finished. This includes the partial bathroom, which has the beginnings of a closet being added and a non-functioning bathtub. - We confirmed that there is absolutely no black mold anywhere in the house. - Our records showed that you paid about $425 per night, including the booking fee that goes directly to Vrbo. We are confident that future guests will continue to enjoy wonderful stays at our historic home!

Fun and unique place to stay and explore the town of Astoria
We had a great experience. The house is in good condition, and is in a great location for exploring Astoria. We liked the location on Irving, just far enough out of the main strip of town to be quiet, yet close enough to explore the sites. We loved the old, Victorian “painted lady” style architecture. Would definitely stay here again and will recommend to friends.

Such a quaint house with everything you need to have a lovely weekend in Astoria. They thought of everything. The kitchen is so well equipped as are the rooms. One bathroom was under construction but it was fine you could use the toilet and the sink and there were two other full baths. The masks on the wall are a little scary but otherwise the house is beautiful. Thanks!

Charming house in need of a LOT of work. Surprised at the lack of low-flow toilets and showers that don't use tons and tons of water. Lumpy carpet in living room needs to be reinstalled or replaced. Description of property needs to state that the house is NOT in walking distance of downtown area. This is a nice quiet location but needed to do more driving than we had planned on.

We stayed four nights in this lovely apartment where we could sit together comfortably, cook meals, and park both of our cars. A nice bonus was finding the Cathedral Tree trail just a short walk from the apartment- a beautiful trail for walking the dog, it takes you right up to the Astoria column and stunning views

We mainly used this house as our central hub as we explored Astoria and the surrounding areas. The house was cute and had a nice view of the river. It was nice having the 4 chairs out on the front porch where we could enjoy our coffee or glass of wine in the robes that were provided. That was a nice surprise. We liked having access to the trail that took us up to the highest point. We were able to cook a couple of meals. I did wish there were more spices and salt in the pantry. The water pressure was very good in the showers. My only complaints were the pet smells and the bathroom with the upside down tub.

Should be called the “Needs Painted Lady”
I spent a fortune on this place for our anniversary and I found it incredibly overpriced. The house appeared to be in a state of disrepair with large patches of paint missing on the exterior. The pictures led me to believe that there would be a large claw foot tub but it was overturned in the bathroom and totally out of commission. I’m a big fan of baths and there is no other tub in the other 2 bathrooms There was an odd musty smell and it just didn’t look very clean. The mattress was old and uncomfortable and there is no door at the top of the stairs which left me feeling like we had a lack of privacy. I stayed at a high end hotel earlier in the week for work and it was $200 less than what I paid per night at the Painted Lady. I feel sick about spending so much on an anniversary getaway for a place that fell so short of my expectations. I feel like I was misled by the pictures and highly disappointed.

Hi Jamie, We are sorry to hear that this vacation home fell short of your expectations. The homeowners are dedicated to the maintenance of the property and are already working on a plan to take care of the paint issues on the exterior of the house. All internal spaces are lovingly maintained, and the apartment is aired out and professionally cleaned before each reservation. We do not advertise in the listing that a claw-foot tub is available since the homeowners are in the process of updating the half-bath with a modern shower. We take the safety and comfort of our guests seriously, and the only entryway that appears not to be completely private is the door at the foot of the stairs in the main entry. Rest assured, this door is secured and not in use. The owners are working on adding signage to the home so that future guests can be confident that the door is not in use during their stay. Travelers would not be able to enjoy 1,000 square feet of living space, a fully-equipped kitchen, or sweeping views of the Columbia River from any local hotels like they can at the Painted Lady, and we are looking forward to helping the homeowners continue to host satisfied guests in this historic vacation rental. The upstairs part of this house was quite comfortable for the three of us. It was clean and nicely decorated. However, I did not appreciate the 2% hike in the price after I had booked it. I had made no changes in my end of the bargain.

Hi Glenda, We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time in this clean and comfortable apartment! The 2% tax increase was set by the city after you confirmed your reservation, and your booking total was updated accordingly. This is the hospitality industry standard across hotels, vacation rentals, and other vacation accommodations in the event of a tax increase. Cute Victorian House with great access to Astoria's waterfront and downtown
We had a pleasant stay at this charming Victorian home. The dining room is the best room in this walk-up apartment: Gorgeous views of the river and boats, a great location to have a fun dinner and drinks with friends. Things that would make this place more comfortable: Sufficient black out curtains in the bed rooms; there was no real protection from the early daybreak, wish I could have slept in on my vacation. An update to TV and sounds system would be greatly appreciated. The coffee maker is in bad need of replacement and we had to spend some time detailing the French press before we could use it. All in all, thanks for a fun stay.

Painted Lady...House on the Hill
Great view of the Columbia River from the kitchen. Very comfortable furnishings set in a quiet neighborhood. Nice, fairly well stocked kitchen but needs a few items - nothing large enough to boil a crab in let alone a pasta dinner for 6. WiFi, but TV only works for playing DVDs, which they have plenty to choose from. No instructions for TV use so wasted a bit of time there. Overall, a pleasant stay, but a little on the expensive side.

Worst place I have ever stayed
First of all, the fact that it was upstairs and only half of the house. Should have been in the main headings of renting it, not the fine print. If hiking up 25 steps everyday just to get to your living space was not enough. The beds were harder than my carpeted floor at home. I can appreciate an antique house, my husband is a builder. May have been one of the reasons we chose it. However, if your going to rent an antique house to people that are on vacation. It should be moderately comfortable. We finally chose to sleep on the couch after waking up to sore necks and backs every morning. The toilet in one of the rooms was only good for one flush, then you had to wait for the tank to fill again. There was no dish clothes or dish towels, we finally found them the morning checking out tucked in some random top closet in family room. There were masks hanging up top of the stairway that were very disturbing to my children. There was absolutely no where to put away your clothes, hang a jacket or slightly settle in. We were given one extra garbage bag, and hardly any paper towels. We had to purchase both of those. If all of this wasn't enough, we had to "clean" before we left...emptying all trash cans, striping all beds, and compiling all dirty towels. Is that a vacation? It was uncomfortable and work. It was clean, it had that at least going for it. Would I ever stay there or recommend it??? Absolutely not!!

We're are sincerely regretful that your stay at the Painted Lady did not meet expectations. As evidenced by many of the reviews on this listing, the property has hosted many happy guests in the past so we're disappointed your experience fell short of the norm. We completely understand the important of setting accurate guest expectations, so we've made it even more clear that this is a 2BR unit within a historic home. The owners have never received complaints in the past about the mattresses, as they are high quality and previous guests have characterized them as quite comfortable. The owners are dedicated to the guest experience and work to provide a welcoming and comfortable environment for all. We're so sorry to hear the kids were disturbed by the masks! They are replicas of masks worn at Victorian costume balls and are decor choice reflective of the era of the home. They have been a part of the property for many years. For storage, there is a dresser in each bedroom, clothes hooks in one of the bedrooms and a 'hall tree' in the entry for umbrellas to borrow and 4-6 coat hooks. However, the owners are taking the constructive feedback to heart and adding additional hooks for future renters in the bedroom. The issue with garbage bags and paper towels was an oversight, we apologize and has been rectified for future renters. As the property is a private home and not a hotel room, there are a few light cleaning tasks requested of renters upon checkout but apologize for the inconvenience this caused and the cleaning fee charged has recently been reduced. We sincerely hope for the opportunity to assist you in your future travels and plan a trip that not only meets but exceeds expectations. Best,The Evolve Team

comfy spot with great views
My husband and I, together with our teenage son and small dog, very much enjoyed our stay at the Painted Lady. The upstairs apartment was clean and well maintained. The kitchen is well appointed, with a good selection of needed items for cooking, dining, and cleaning. There is plenty of space to relax, and since the weather was lovely, we opened up the windows to enjoy a nice breeze. Guests (including canine ones) are provided with many thoughtful extras, from bathrobes, to dog dishes and bones, to lotion and shampoo. The location was a good fit for us: very quiet with great views out to the river and across; close to the start of a pleasant walking trail that leads through the woods up to the Astoria column; and walkable (if you feel like seeing the neighborhood by foot and don't mind the hills) to Safeway and the east end of the walk down the riverside. It's also a quick drive to Fort Stevens/beach as well as to Fort Clatsop.

Unique home with wonderful views and a couple downers
The good! This is a wonderful, partially restored, old unique home. The owners clearly have taken pride in improving and decorating it to reflect the era it was built. The views are fantastic and the accomodations are functional. We found the kitchen to be large, well appointed and more than adequate. The parlor was a delightful room connecting the two bedrooms. We slept well on the comfortable beds, listening to the faint sound of the sealions. It was fun being in a historical home in such a classic town like Astoria. Check in was a breeze as they utilize a well performing electronic code lock on the front door. There is a nice parking lot on the side of the house. The not so good? It's important to remember you are in an old house that has not been completly renovated. Remember that you are reserving half of it, upstairs only. The lower level is occupied by a permanent resident. Also keep in mind that the pictures represent the very best look through the magic of photography as you would expect to some degree when an owner is trying to show a home in it's best possible way. In short, It's a bit more run down than presented. Some surprises: When we entered the house it smelled in a strong "old house" sort of way. Opening the windows helped for sure, but the smell was always present when you returned. Tolerable, but not pleasant at all we all agreed. In the rear bedroom there is a tub with no plumbing so that person must bathe somewhere else. The plumbing had a slow leak at the sink as well so all that worked was the toliet. There are no clothes dressers or closets in the rooms so you are living out of your suitcase. Not a huge deal, but generally when on vacation we don't like getting handed a list of chores espicially when you just paid a $100 cleaning fee. Here is a partial list of check out chores: Prior to your departure, please tidy up the unit by doing the following: Take the trash out to the garbage and recycling receptacles, located near the parking lot Load and start the dishwasher Place all used towels in a garbage bag, found in the kitchen, and leave the bag at the top of the stairs Strip all used linens and place them on the floor next to the beds Additional fees will be imposed if the unit is found in an unsatisfactory condition, so please return it to the condition in which you found it. We hope this review proves helpful to the renter with tempering expectations and the owners for helping with improvements.

Response from VrboOwner on 5 Mar 2020
Thanks for taking the time to post a review. The owners put a lot of work into taking care of and improving the home, so your feedback related to the sink is appreciated so that it can be quickly addressed. There is a dresser in each bedroom, visible in the photos, and wall hooks with hangers available. This is the first time we've received feedback regarding the scent of the house, as it hasn't been a concern of previous guests. It is mentioned in the listing description that there is a long term tenant in the lower level, so we hope this wasn't a surprise. As this is a vacation rental and not a hotel room, there are a few typical check-out requirements, which are now described in the Rental Agreement so travelers can be aware before they book. We try hard to represent homes as accurately as possible so that guests have appropriate expectations. We wish you luck in your future travels. ~ The Evolve Team

Thank you for providing a review of your stay! The vacation rental unit within the house is located on the second floor and while the kitchen is small, it is fully functional and depicted accurately in the photos.
