Asahiyama Park

Admire spectacular views of Sapporo and the Sea of Japan from the hilltop of this park, which features scenic nature trails and an impressive fountain.

Rolling green hills weave through Asahiyama Memorial Park, a former farm converted into a large green space overlooking the center of Sapporo. Its peaks grant stunning views that stretch as far as the Sea of Japan. Enjoy the vistas of the white towers making up the city center from the summits of hills reaching as high as 450 feet (137 meters) above sea level.

Stroll through the landscape gardens of the park, enjoying the fresh air and tranquil ambiance. Set up a picnic on the steps surrounding the fountain, which is beautifully illuminated in the evening. You can also sit at wooden picnic tables nestled between the trees.

The park has a maze of walking paths, a suspended bridge and numerous restrooms. Let your kids frolic in the play area and splash in the fountain. Come at sunset to watch the city’s sky turn crimson. At night, it becomes a flurry of lights. Walk south for about 1 hour for additional views from the Mount Moiwa Observation Deck.

Opened in 1970 to commemorate Sapporo’s 100-year anniversary, the park had major enhancements completed from 2004 to 2008. Wander around the site to see the memorials referenced in its name. Rather than commemorating wars and military heroes, these monuments honor poets, tree planting and coming of age.

The braille signage and low-incline paths with slip resistance make the park a welcoming place for visitors with visual and accessibility handicaps.

Find Asahiyama Memorial Park in the Chuo ward, in the southwestern part of Sapporo. From the center of the city, ride a bus to arrive in roughly 45 minutes. You can also drive here in about 20 minutes, avoiding walking up the steep hill leading to the park. Access is free.

While you’re in this part of the city, make sure to visit other nearby sights such as the Sapporo City Maruyama Zoo, the Sapporo Fushimi Inari Shrine and the Hokkaidō Shrine.
