History & Culture
From the Santuari fortress of Sant Salvador you can see the town of Artá, this fortress being an important attraction for those who visit the island. To get to the Sanctuary you have to take a walk in the shade of the trees, climbing 180 steps to reach the entrance of the sanctuary. This fortress was built in the fourteenth century, but has been renovated in the nineteenth century. Inside the church you will find some fabulous works of art and the sanctuary garden is an ideal place to enjoy the views.

One of the least known facts about Artá ​​is that it was one of the last villages in Europe to suffer an outbreak of bubonic plague. Moreover, the nearby fishing village Colonia de Sant Pere, was founded by plague survivors who left Artá ​​to avoid contagion.

Historically the surroundings of Artá ​​are known for the production of pottery and basketry. In the archaeological excavations we have discovered tissue fibers that suggest that the basketry would be among the oldest trades of the island.
