Antequera

Travel Guide

This hidden treasure, tucked away in the heart of Andalusia, is sure to win you over with its history, monuments and exquisite cuisine.

Antequera is an important Andalusian town thanks to its strategic location, and has played a key role throughout history, as is reflected in its rich culture and fascinating heritage. During your holidays in Antequera, not only will you enjoy the archaeological findings and religious and cultural monuments, but you will also be surrounded by fabulous natural surroundings, starting with the Peñón de los Enamorados, the Lovers’ Rock, which has given rise to incredible legends.

The history of Antequera dates back to the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the colossal megalith made up of the Menga, Viera dolmens and the tholos of El Romeral. The Romans also left their mark on the town, as can be seen in the municipal museum, with works such as El Efebo. Through the Arco de los Gigantes, the Giants’ Arch, you can reach the Arab Alcazaba, testament to the continued fighting between Muslims and Christians that took place in Antequera.

Christian monuments are plentiful, and one of the most important ones is the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, which is a beautiful example of the Renaissance style. If you like outdoor activities, make the most of your cheap trips to Antequera and go discover the extraordinary landscape of El Torcal natural park, a fabulous example of a karst relief. The Lobo Park, dedicated to the conservation and protection of wolves, is another essential stop for animal lovers.

One of the most comfortable and quickest ways to travel to Antequera once in Spain is by train, with lines from Madrid, Cordoba and Malaga, among others and you can find the nearest airport in Malaga, about thirty miles away. You can also search for a package holiday to Antequera that includes car rental to quickly get around other Andalusian villages or to enjoy the beaches of the Costa del Sol.

Either as a stop-off on a tour of Andalusia or as the destination for a weekend getaway, Antequera is definitely not to be missed on your next holidays.

Something other-worldly about this place
"Beautiful location, outside of the charming town of Antequera. We went at the coldest time of year and it felt almost challet-like with open fire and use of the Jacuzzi. The staff were really helpful and the food it the bar was really good. Personally really enjoyed a bit of old-school charm."
