Find hotels in Akagera from £14

The best area to stay in Akagera is within the Akagera National Park itself, specifically in the northern and central regions, which offer the most direct access to wildlife viewing.

Staying inside the park provides the ultimate convenience for safari-goers. The main roads and tracks for game drives traverse these areas, meaning you're often just a short drive from spotting wildlife right from your accommodation. The park's diverse landscapes, from savannahs to wetlands, are easily accessible from lodges situated here.

For couples seeking an exclusive and intimate safari experience, properties in the northern part of the park are ideal. These lodges often provide stunning views over Lake Ihema or the surrounding plains, offering a tranquil setting. They typically feature private balconies or decks where you can relax and watch animals, along with amenities such as infinity pools and fine dining.

Families will find the central part of the park particularly convenient. Many lodges here offer a range of room types, including family suites, and often have amenities like swimming pools and organised activities for children.

The best time to visit Akagera is during the dry season, which runs from June to September and then again from December to February.

During these months, the weather is generally sunny with less rainfall, making wildlife viewing easier. The vegetation is sparser, so animals are more visible as they gather around the remaining water sources. This is ideal for those hoping to see a wide variety of wildlife, including the 'Big Five'.

For travellers who prefer a slightly greener landscape and a more relaxed pace without the peak season crowds, the shoulder months of March to May and October to November can also be a good option.
