4/5 Good

Liked: Staff & service
The staff is wonderful, reception and bar especially. Rooms and bathrooms are clean, although you can find some old clothes behind bedside tables. Restaurant tables need a bit more cleaning, because despite the outer clean, they are sticky. Surroundings are fantastic and you can rest well, unless there is a wedding, then be prepared not to go to sleep before midnight. Which is to be expected, however I would suggest booking guests who are not a part of the wedding in rooms that are further away or other side from the courtyard.

Lovely location, peaceful stay
Maryculter House is in a lovely location right by the River Dee. From our river view room, we could watch the grey heron fishing, the salmon jumping and the golfers across the river at Peterculter. It was nice just to sit and look out, but when we ventured out, there is plenty to see around Stonehaven, Aberdeen and the eastern side of the Cairngorms. Because of Covid, many of the museums and distilleries were closed, but we enjoyed walks to Dunnottar Castle (very steep climbs and a lot of stairs!), along the Dee, and around Lock Kinord at Dinnet which were all beautiful. We returned to the hotel for dinner each night. The food was mostly local - lamb, beef, cod - and good, if not spectacular. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Overall, it is a lovely place for a short stay to enjoy the countryside.
