New passport regulations for travellers to the U.S.A.
As of 26 October 2004 all travellers to the U.S.A. must have a machine readable passport. Only UK citizens whose passports were issued outside the UK are likely to have a non-machine readable one. Travellers without a machine readable passport must have a Visa to enter the U.S.A.
Separate passports for children and infants
As of 26 October 2004 children, including babies, must have a separate machine-readable passport. This has been a requirement since 1998, but children born before then may still be on their parents’ passports. Families who do not have individual passports will not be allowed to travel to the U.S.A.
New screening procedures
Hold baggage may be opened after check-in, so travellers must leave their baggage unlocked or face the lock being forcibly opened by security personnel.
