Lovely Countryside Hotel

Posted 23-Jul-2014
Pros: Beautiful building, amazing location and fantastic staff!
Cons: Bedroom - I wouldn't pay £250 again for this standard of room.
Location: Great country pubs and restaurants (particularly liked the 'Snooty Fox') Longleat wildlife safari and Centre Parcs only 10 minutes away!
The Hotel was beautiful, the staff were amazing and the facilities were good. Our only disappointment was our room, although clean, it was very tired. Complementary ESPA products were a lovely touch, but badly attached replaced wall tiles etc in the bathroom really let it down.

Lovely country house hotel

Posted 02-Dec-2013
Pros: Big room, friendly, polite staff
Cons: Longer pool hours for children
Location: Longleat close by.
Stayed as a family, with two children aged 8 and 6. We booked as it had a swimming pool and were disappointed that children under 16 could only use the pool between 8 - 10am and 330 - 6 (I think). This wasn't mentioned on website and as it's sold as family friendly and part of longleat group thought hours should be longer. This was really my only complaint. We stayed in room 10 on top floor of old house. Very spacious family room with a small separate bedroom for children. One bathroom which was very large but lacked a separate shower. Bathroom also rather cold - needed underfloor heating or another radiator. Staff were extremely helpful and polite. We ate in both the conservatory and mulberry restaurant. Service was excellent, food was average and slightly overpriced for what it was but we enjoyed it and children made very welcome. Breakfast was excellent. We visited Longleat one day and this was easy to get to. Hotel was overall very comfortable and homely and prettily decorated for Xmas. We felt like we were house guests and enjoyed sitting in the lounge in front of the log fire playing board games.

Shaftesbury suite is perfect for older families

Posted 17-Apr-2013
Pros: The suite
Cons: Restaurant/breakfast
Location: It was ideal for Longleat and the town centre
The Shaftesbury suite is superb for families, if it rains you feel more like at home than in a hotel room as there is plenty of space over two floors. I would definitely recommend the hotel, however you do need a sense of humour. Sadly employing cheap labour means all attention to detail is lost. There was o water in our room and when I asked for some the lady he was making our room could not understand ONE word of English, so we went without until I met with the lovely porter who sorted it out for us. The sofa bed was broken despite being made up, so we had to call to report it. The tv in the bathroom only picked up 4 channels and BBC was not one of them. For breakfast they ran out of hot chocolate and white bread. We asked for soft boiled eggs for our sons saying no more than 3 minutes. 30 minutes later our breakfast arrived despite only 3 tables being taken up in the restaurant. The eggs were hard and my omelette was lumpy you could tell the egg had not been beaten properly. My advice is don't eat there. Whoever is in the kitchen has not qualified as a chef in England. When asking about Longleat on reception, despite this hotel belonging to that group, the man kept me waiting 20 minutes trying to look up prices and if there were any discounts he should have known this. Please don't let this put you off, again I recommend this hotel, but it's just a warning so you do not end up disappointed. The spa was good, but I found the pool disappointing

Avoid

Posted 01-Nov-2012
Pros: Leaving
Cons: Attitude of initial staff
Location: Ok
A very expensive night! Dinner in the hotel was of the size of "I'm done already and I don't remember eating!" Cost of the meal was ridiculous too. Serving staff were very good, however, supervisors and management were dreadful. Not helpful or courteous. The bed for my 4 year old was a squeaky camp bed, again not what I have experienced at similar hotels, ie. Hotel Du Vin. I deeply regret treating my family to an overpriced experience.

Excellent hotel

Posted 26-May-2012
Pros: The room and also the staff
Location: Set in a gorgeous part of England
We had a really good night away, the staff could not have done more for us if they had tried. We will defiantly go back because it was one of the best places we had ever stayed.

Bishopstrow House

Good value for money, excellent customer service, clean, beautiful surroundings, and spa treatments very very good. My only complaint is that you can hear the other residents talking in the rooms above you. Otherwise good weekend away!

One of those hotels you simply must visit...

Posted 03-May-2012 on Hotels.com
What can I say. After booking via hotels.com (, best rates we could find for a classic room,) a few weeks in advance we were looking forward to our trip. It was for my partners birthday and all she had said she wanted was a spa weekend, and a visit to Longleat! We arrived at the lovely house which is very easy to find and were taken to our room. Somehow we had managed to be upgraded from a Classic Room to a Deluxe Room/Suite! We had our own living room, bedroom, and very large ensuite. We glimpsed inside a few of the standard rooms as well walking around and had we have been put in one we would have been equally happy! For visiting places its very convenient, we visited Longleat, Bath, & Bristol whilst there... The service in the hotel was amazing, the food lovely, and the surroundings amazing. We had drinks & a small meal by the open fire in the old library one night..! Breakfast was very good and there was a good selection on offer. Basically... if you go here you will be more than happy! Oh... and we visited the spa many times over the course of our two nights and it was very relaxing, the sauna/steam room have the most amazing shower beside them. I won't tell you what it does though... you will have to give it a go to find out!

Great recovery

Posted 30-Apr-2012
When we arrived our room had just been painted and was full of fumes, we reported this to the reception and were ungraded to a suite. We love this hotel, we've stayed there several times before and recommend it highly. James
