Full of character and very welcoming staff. Perfect if you want a hotel that is unique, full of charm and history right at the heart of the Medina. The roof terrace with different seating areas is a bonus. might not suit those who like the big hotel chains, but I would choose this every time.

Dar Ben Gacem is beautiful, welcoming, and the perfect location to enjoy the Tunis medina and its best cafes. The staff is super helpful, always available, and really caring. The women who prepare and serve the amazing breakfast (Shakshouka!) are so kind. The rooms are amazing but so are the common areas, and the place is full of beautiful books about Tunisia.

The hotel is absolutely beautiful. The location in the medida is fantastic. The decor is tasteful and the staff is professional and very friendly. It feels like home. The building is a jewel, you feel very special being there. Great location, delicious breakfast. I loved it. Thank you

Amazing guesthouse from the 1600s with great antiques, right in the middle of La Medina. The staff is incredibly kind and helpful and went out of their way to help make dinner reservations, show me local lunch places, help me with a cab to the airport, etc.

Interesting hotel but varying room qualities
A pleasant hotel with friendly service and good location that serves as a great introduction to the historic Tunis. We enjoyed the breakfast and exploring areas of the hotel. An airport transfer was arranged that cost 30 Tunisian dinar. Our room was interesting but much smaller and less comfortable (including the shower room) than expected from the pictures so we felt overcharged and less happy than we might have been overall.

Incredible guesthouse with really friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was fantastic. Lovely local feel to the place, nice architectural touches and great location in the medina, although just enough away from the hustle and bustle to be a little oasis. Really highly recommended.

Great boutique hotel that oozes character from youths minute you step through the front door. It is well positioned right near the Markets in the old town. The staff were some of the most friendly that I have ever encountered & they really went out of their way ( particularly Mr Daali) to ensure we a most memorable & comfortable stay. Will definitely return there when traveling back to Tunis.

Something traditional
We had a nice time at Dar Ben-Gacem. It was well located and the service was great. Our room was very quiet and spacious. It was great to see something traditional. The breakfast on the last day was great, and we enjoyed the coffee and delicious fruit every morning and they are happy to give more of everything. There is a beautiful roof deck with an amazing view of the medina. The downsides: the room gets very warm if the air conditioning was not running as there were only two very small windows for air. Other rooms appeared to have much better windows. There was only a tub in our room, which made taking showers difficult. The breakfast was bread, cheese, and fruit on two of our three days, which is a bit plain, but there were good eggs the last day. There may have been eggs for other days as well, but we did not ask so that may be our fault. The room was clean but the floors are traditional so a bit dusty, and the rugs on the floor and around the bed are worn.

Stay at this hotel, for an authentic Medina experience. If you crave Western experiences, Tunis's main street (sometimes called Tunis's Champs Elysee) is just a ten-minute walk away. The hotel will book a cab for you and it will come to the door, but otherwise you are unlikely to be able to hail a cab in the Medina, as they are not keen to penetrate the warren of narrow streets and alleys. The Medina is completely safe and women can walk through without fear of being propositioned.

Charming hotel in the kasbah
This converted home is centrally located in the middle of the kasbah and affords lots of charm and convenience. For an authentic Tunisia experience, avoid the typical western style hotels and immerse yourself in the controlled chaos of the kasbah. Hotel staff is flawless and very helpful. The breakfast is homemade with love by a local cook and she's amazing.

Historic 17th century Villa Extraordinary Beauty
This was a stunningly beautiful Tunisian Villa, authentically restored to its origins as a 17th century merchant's home in the heart of the souk. It was an authentic cultural experience with old world hospitality and modern necessities, free wi-fi and updated western bathroom. I was unfortunately here for only a short business stay, but I would describe the hotel as extraordinarily cozy and romantic. Delicious Tunisian meals were served in the beautiful interior courtyard. Staff were friendly and helpful. Arranging details with Leila the owner by internet was easy. My compliments to the owner and architect who lovingly restored this villa. Job well done. I feel like I need to keep writing and every line would describe the beauty of this place. For travelers who want the predictability of a multinational hotel franchise this is not the place for you. For adventure, romance, authentic culture, beauty, and an extraordinary experience off the beaten path, may you enjoy the Dar Ben Gacem as much or more than I did.

The worst experience - totally misleading !!!
This is nothing short of SHOCKING - this has to be the worst place i have ever stayed in my life - as soon as i walked through through the door and saw dead flowers, shabby decor throughout was shown to my room off the small courtyard which was booked and paid as a suite i was shocked - wanted to run out and go back to the airport - i sent email to the Customer Service staff at Hotel.com to tell them booked the next flight out for Sunday and told the only English speaking person when he came 4 hours later that i am checking out on the Sunday and that this is shocking - he could not understand as thought perfectly normal???? There are no facilities - toiletries, water or information about the place or area especially when they do not speak English. Bedding has seen better days the toilet seat on verge of coming off and place could do with good clean and wiped down - bedding and pillows smell and privacy - what privacy small flimsy curtains to shield the windows but can still lights outside room and that stays on throughout the night as that the common area. I took breakfast this morning which is communal as is the evening meal in a table outside my room so i hear everything well into the night from other rooms, the kitchen and staff, kids playing outside and walking past and anyone smoking or whatever - it the worst i have ever experienced - am not happy and am expecting some course of action here as this totally misleading!

Authenticity and Comfort in Cultural Tunis Medina
Dar Ben-Gacen is a lovely hotel in the old medina of Tunis. This is not a luxury hotel, but it is extremely comfortable and has an incredible amount of heart, culture, and authenticity. The owner Leila is fantastic. The staff are locally sourced from the Medina and also provided everything we need. I highly recommend you stay here for a unique experience in Tunis.

Too costly for being so rundown and filthy
This was one of the most highly rated places across multiple sites when we booked our tripped. So, we were incredibly surprised by the terrible condition of the hotel. We were first hit by how discrepant the beautiful pictures online are from reality. It's the equivalent of posting dating profile pictures from when you were 20 years younger and 100 pounds lighter. Everything in the hotel is covered in a layer of dust, and the carpets are so dirty that you fear walking barefoot in the room even for an instance. And, everything is rundown - not in the charming classic hotel kind of way - in the lack of care kind of way. The doors to the restroom would not open from the inside because of missing doorknobs. The lights in the bathroom either had their protective cover broken or didn't work. The water pressure barely allowed for a 3 minute shower. The television (no bigger than about 20 inches) didn't work. The promised coffee/tea maker was non-existent. The bed wasn't made when we arrived. This is an expensive hotel. When we booked it, we knew that we would be sacrificing amenities like easy access to a restaurant and an airport shuttle (which are available in the European style hotels). However, we expected a charming setting to offset that loss. There was no charm. Just a dirty, rundown place to cringe in for a few nights. I wouldn't ever return, and I wouldn't recommend it to others.

The hotel was absolutely beautiful. The rooms were very comfortable and well decorated. The hotel art and decor was on point. We enjoyed relaxing in the ambient courtyard in the evening hours. The hotel is centrally located in the middle of the Medina which is ideal for shoppers! Breakfast was lovely, and the taxi was promptly arranged for our departure for the airport. We will certainly be looking to stay on our next visit to Tunis!

An Absolute Gem
This hotel is a gem. Perfectly situated on a quiet-ish street in the Medina, it is within walking distance of the Kasbah, souks, train stations, plenty of places to eat, and many of the top sites. The room we stayed in was beautiful, with great attention to detail. The bed was comfortable, even if it was only a double. The hotel staff was incredibly helpful as we tried to navigate around the city and they also gave advice on how to travel outside Tunis. The breakfast was fine. Only complaint was that there was sometimes a foul sewage smell in the bathroom, but we just kept the exhaust fan on most of the time.

Dar Ben-Gacem
The Dar Ben-Gacem has restored a 17th century home into a 7 room guest house and it is one of the most unique hotel experiences that an American can have. The hotel sits in the heart of the Medina. The rooms are modernized and updated, but still retain their cultural charm.

An Oasis in Tunis
I booked this hotel on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews and I wasn't disappointed. It is located just off the Tunis Medina down some very narrow streets and off the beaten track. At first, I wasn't sure what I had let myself in for, but the moment we stepped through the door, we entered another world. It's a boutique hotel exquisitely decorated in the old moorish style, including a lovely courtyard (where we had our breakfast) and rooms off it on the ground and first floor. Our room was small but so very lovely, with a wooden shutters at the windows, carpet on the floor, and a large and comfy raised divan bed. The bathroom was modern (with shower, basin, and toilet). Overall, it was very quiet although we could hear in the distant the call to prayer, which we found really atmospheric. Breakfast was great! Yoghurt, fruit, fruit juice, and bread and pastries, and the best coffee I have had ever. We stayed two nights and on both nights, we ate in. There is no restaurant or menu as such but the staff was happy to organise local cuisine depending on our food preference. I really recommend doing this as the food was delicious and reasonable and there is a cosy and charming small dining room to use. The hotel is decorated throughout with traditional fabrics and furniture as well as some very modern art pieces which blend in well with them. We fell in love with the place and would have loved to stay longer.
